What is Black Day?
April 14th is a date that looms large across East Asia. First comes Valentine’s Day on February 14th — women give chocolate to men they like. Then White Day on March 14th — men return the favor with gifts, usually white chocolate but maybe sexy lingerie. And then, for the guys who came up empty on both days, there’s Black Day on April 14th.
Black Day is a South Korean tradition where single men gather to eat jajangmyeon — noodles in black bean sauce — and commiserate about their lonely romantic situation. It’s a fun excuse to wear black clothing and hang out with other single guys, drinking and laughing at themselves.
