Today is Good Knee Socks Day in Japan. Why is that? Well, because the number 11 can be read as ii (meaning good) in Japanese, there’s a large number of unofficial celebratory days, like Good Oppai Day, Nice Tummies Day, and even Good Butt Day. Japan is always coming up with random new days to celebrate online.
As you can see in the chart above, there are several classifications of socks in Japan depending on their length. These range from anklets to low crew and crew, high and knee-high, over-knee and thigh-high, and tights, which go all the way up. Did you know there were this many categories of socks?
Let’s Check Out the Best Knee-Socks in Anime!
I spent the afternoon browsing the best images and GIFs of cute anime girls in knee-socks to show you in this post. Enjoy!
Knee-high socks might be a fashion accessory most of us don’t think about very much, but it’s clear anime character designers do. Often anime studios put extreme detail into showing us what kinds of socks characters are wearing, animating them in great detail.
What’s the appeal of cute socks that reach up to the knees? They highlight the character’s youth and innocence and give the character designers a lot of flexibility with what kinds of socks to give their characters.
If there’s a single anime that has captured the soul of knee socks, it’s K-On! The socks each character wears are part of their overall design their socks (or tights, in the case of Yui Hirasawa) are as important as each character’s hairstyle.
Animators Love Drawing Cute Socks
Socks are fun objects for animators because they’re common, everyday items that we all see and touch every day. So it’s fun to watch anime characters interacting with them, too.
Another benefit of knee socks is that they leave plenty of thigh for viewers to see, compared with over-knee socks or thigh-highs. This gives the opportunity for fan service.
Black knee socks are great because they contrast the color of the character’s skin, and give us something to focus on. N- Nice angle!
It’s great when an anime character comes along that captures the fascination with these unique fashion items. Like Kneesocks, one of the two demons in Panty And Stockings With Garterbelt.
One artist who’s done a lot for fans of knee socks is O-Uso (“big lie”), who draws girls who let us see their panties on a train. He’s definitely a man who appreciates a good pair of socks. Browse all his official hentai products here!
There’s nothing that won’t be fetishized in our modern world. Would you like a furry girl wearing a dog collar and school swimsuit with socks? I’ll take five of them!
More Fun with Anime Girls Wearing Knee Socks!
Sometimes it can be hard to catch what kind of socks an anime girl is wearing. Have you ever noticed these socks before?
I mean, our eyes automatically go to a different part of a girl’s body than her socks, understandably.
Fans all love Zettai Ryoiki, the “sweet three centimeters” between the top of a girl’s thigh-high socks and where her skirt begins. This word means “absolute territory” and started as the A.T. Fields in Evangelion before becoming a fashion trend in the early 2000s. While thigh-highs are great, lower knee-high socks give us even more of this wonderful space to contemplate.
Yes, knee socks are great, and girls who wear them are super cute!
