Japan is a country that loves to commemorate various things by designating a special day to remember them, and in the age of the Internet, this means people get to have fun making Twitter posts celebrating that topic. Today is the final day of November, which for various reasons has become #いいお尻の日 or Good Butt Day in Japan. So let’s enjoy some anime butts together!
Why Does Japan have a ‘Good Butt Day?’
For reasons that are quite difficult for us gaijin to follow, numbers can be read phonetically to the Japanese. Before cell phones came along, “pocket bells” (beepers) were all the rage, and my students used to send messages to each other in numbers, like 084 for ohayo (good morning). Here are some phonetically based special days!
- February 9 is niku no hi or Meat Day, because the numbers 2 and 9 can be pronounced as “meat.”
- November 1 is Dog Day in Japan, because the number one phonetically matches ワン wan! which is the sound of a dark’s bark.
- Since the ’11’ in November looks like the word for “good,” there are a lot of “good” days this month, like Good Married Couple Day on November 22, or Good Bath Day on November 26.
- Being the final day of the month, 11/30 becomes Good Butt Day, because why not?
“Hey Siri, What’s the Japanese Word for ‘Butt’?”
When Apple released its first version of Siri in 2011, there were more than a few giggles in Japan because the word famously means “butt” in Japanese, though it’s pronounced shiri and not siri. I remember having a girl working at a shop in Akihabara ask me if I’d like to see the then-new iPhone 4s. When I said, “Yes, I’d really like to see ‘Siri’,” things got suddenly awkward, because of course I’d basically asked her to show me her ass.
