Happy Birthday to Aki Toyosaki. How Did She Become a Voice Actress?
Aki Toyosaki was born in Tokushima Prefecture on Japan’s fourth largest island of Shikoku. While still in high school, she got involved with a local broadcasting company, doing reporting and interviews on local topics. She received a letter from a fan suggesting that she explore voice acting as a career due to her unique voice, which made her curious about the industry.
She found early success appearing in works like Minami-ke and Shugo Chara! But when she was chosen for the role of Yui Hirasawa from Kyoto Animation’s smash hit K-On!, she rocketed to instant stardom in the seiyuu world. She’s had many other notable roles, from the airheaded Uihara from Index and Railgun to the busty Yunyun from Konosuba to the outdoor camp-loving Inuko from Laid-Back Camp. In addition to her voice work, she’s created quite a successful singing career.
Aki Toyosaki discovered the darker side of fandom when a fan followed her back to her apartment and saw that she had a live-in boyfriend. This caused K-On! fans to destroy their Yui Hirasawa merchandise. The reaction was similar to when Japan’s “weather idol” Saya Hiyama was found to be dating a tennis star, causing a negative response on social media. Stop doing stuff like that, anime fans!
Aki’s hobby is drawing, and she has an official X account where she posts her illustrations. She also loves making fantastic coffee and passionately follows basketball.
What Are Aki Toyosaki’s Most Iconic Roles? Let’s Explore Them Together!
Izana from Knights of Sidonia
Her first solo lead role was Izana from the Knights of Sidonia anime, a hard SF work funded by Netflix. This show pioneered the “let’s fund anime through streaming,” which has become the norm in the industry today.
Chitose from Yuru Yuri
Although she plays cute or strong heroines as well as anyone, Aki does have a sexy side. She brings this out with characters like the ultra-perverted Chitose from Yuru Yuri.
Tomo Yamanobe from Seikon no Qwaser
Tomo from The Qwaser of Stigmata was one of her sexiest roles. Her voice really brought the ditzy Tomo to life!
Uiharu from A Certain Scientific Railgun
One of my favorite voice roles by Aki Toyosaki is Uiharu from A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun. I love it when Saten-san lifts her skirt to check out her pantsu!
Iori from Kokoro Connect
Another iconic character was Iori from Kokoro Connect, a fun anime about body switching. What an outstanding performance this was!
Aki Toyosaki’s Akane from Scum’s Wish
The mark of a talented voice actress is when she can do a role in one of my favorite anime series, but I won’t notice that it’s her. Scum’s Wish, by Oshi no Ko artist Mengo Yokoyari, is a romantic anime with a deliciously complex plot involving “surprise yuri.” Aki Toyosaki played Akane, the slutty teacher who can’t stop sleeping around.
Medaka Kurokami from Medaka Box
Another fun role by Aki was the lead from Medaka Box. Did you watch this series?
Aki Toyosaki Voices Yunyun, Too
One of her most famous roles is the busty Yunyun from Konosuba. She just wants Megumin to duel with her!
Inuyama Aoi Made Yuru Camp a Hit
The Laid-Back Camp anime was off to a slow start in its first season. Then the hot springs episode hit, and the sight of “Inuko” in the bath made fans go wild, making “how do two girls have sex in a tent” memes left and right. (This is a fan edit.)
Momo Belia Deviluke Made Us Want to Date an Alien
Another breakout role for Aki Toyosaki was Momo Belia Deviluke from To Love-Ru Darkness. She’s a cute girl who loves to put Rito into sexy situations and watch him squirm.
Yui Hirasawa Made Us Want to Start a Band
My son is apparently easily influenced by anime. He’s a fan of Yowamushi Pedal and joined his university’s cycling team, riding all around Japan. And he loved K-On! so much that he made us buy him an electric guitar (a Gibson Les Paul in Cherry Sunburst, of course). He got quite good at playing before moving on to other things.
Aki Tokosaki was even a weather girl! She gave the weather reports for one week only, and fans went wild at seeing their favorite voice actress in such a unique role.
Finally, here’s an iconic moment when the five voice actresses from K-On! — Aki Toyosaki, Yoko Hikasa, Minato Kotobuki, Satomi Sato, and Ayana Taketatsu — all performed for a live audience, playing their own instruments. They’d practiced for months to get to the point where they could perform in front of fans, and they did a fantastic job.
