It was created in 2009 by the M&M Socks Company, which wanted to bring attention to the importance of high-quality legwear. Why Does Japan Have a Tights Day?
Now that we’re in November, prepare to see lots of “good XX day” posts on your favorite blog or social media network. This is because the number 11 can be read ii, meaning good, and Japanese love to assign special days based on phonetic readings. For example, November 8th is Good Boobs Day because “08” can be read as oppai in Japanese. The number 23 can be read as fuufu or “married couple,” so the Japanese government created Good Married Couple’s Day on November 23. It’s a special occasion to take your spouse out on a date, and maybe get sexy and make some future taxpayers.
Tights vs Stockings: What’s the Difference?
The Japanese can get quite obsessive about legwear, drawing a sharp distinction between different kinds of leg coverings.
- Tights are one-piece leg coverings that cover the hips and go all the way down to the feet. They’re generally thick, with fans debating whether 40 or 100 denier (a measurement of the thickness of the yarn used) is best.
- Sheer or see-through nylon stockings are called “panty-stockings,” and they’ve got their own fetish community.
- Thigh-high stockings, over-knee, and crew socks are all kept separate by foot fetish fans. Japan even has a separate day to celebrate knee-high socks, because of course they do.
