All around the world, people are getting ready for a nice Christmas holiday. In Japan you know the season has arrived when every city breaks out in beautiful lights which are magical to look at. As with cherry blossoms in April, Japanese cities compete to promote their illumination as being the most beautiful in the country in order to attract visitors, and if you happen to find yourself in Tokyo in December, be sure and stroll by Shinjuku Terrace City or Roppongi Hills to see the amazing display of lights there. Although kids love Christmas in Japan, it’s also seen as a special time for couples to go on a romantic date, and Christmas Eve is the second busiest night after Valentine’s Day for restaurants (and, ahem, love hotels).
Last month Japanese Prime Minister Abe (pronounced “ah-bey”) announced that he was dissolving Japan’s lower legislative house. To Americans this sounds like something that might precede civil war, but in countries with British-style Parliamentary systems it just means that the government is temporarily dissolved so it can be re-formed after an election determines how many seats each party will win. Abe is leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, which is conservative, pro-business and pro-U.S. relations, and they’re trying to push their “Abenomics” policy of forcing the economy to grow through inflation. It’s been rough going so far, though: prices have only risen a little, and wages even less, though companies in export industries are doing well. This is truly a new era in Japanese politics, because it marks the first time I’ve seen ads for Japanese politicians in my Facebook feed. In the past, candidates were banned from using the Internet to get votes because each recipient counted as a printed political flyer, which are subject to various legal limitations. Hopefully we’re entering an era in which candidates will promote themselves online rather than driving around in speaker cars shouting “I am Tanaka! Please remember my name on election day! I will work hard for you!”
