Back in the year 2016, studio MAPPA struck anime gold when they released the massive runaway hit series, Yuri!!! On Ice. Ever since the final episode aired, however, it’s been a slow drip to get information on more!
First, we learned that the follow-up was going to be a movie. A year later we learned that the title of the movie was going to be Ice Adolescence. Then a while later in 2019, a promotional video was shown at a theatrical re-screening of the series in Japan but never uploaded online. We were also told that the movie would be released in 2019 but was then delayed to an unknown later date. Finally, after months of waiting, we have an update! Not only that, we have the previously un-uploaded promotional video to show you! First, let’s go to the tape…
Now that you’ve been sufficiently buttered up and emotionally prepared, we have to break the news to you that the movie will not be seeing a release any time in the immediate future. In a statement posted to the official Twitter account (seen below), the production staff revealed that they are still working on the movie which, let’s face it, is a serious bummer to hear.
This is the second time that I’ve had to write one of these articles with the other one being in September 2019. Let’s hope that this is the last time I have to write these sentences again!
Yuri!!! On Ice is an original anime that was released as a twelve-episode series in October 2016. The series uses ice skating as its central theme to tell a story about friendship and refinding one’s self-confidence. After a successful television run, the follow-up movie was announced in April 2017. Written and directed by Sayo Yamamoto, the series features animation from famed studio MAPPA (Kids on the Slope, Kakegurui, Zombie Land Saga). Both the animation studio and original director will be returning to the movie.
