Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! (Dosanko Gyaru wa Namaramenkoi) is one of those very descriptive titles that appropriately capture the content of the series. A guy from Tokyo moves to a city in Hokkaido and meets a cute gyaru. He then meets a few other cute girls. Country living is great, isn’t it? Fans of the series will find out how good it is when it premieres sometime in January 2024. We’ll have to make do with the trailer for now.
Studios Silver Link and Blade have set up a promotional home page for Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! The site includes the key arts, as well as cast and crew commentary. Additionally, they have set up an official Twitter page that fans can follow for further series updates. Fans can even follow the mangaka, Kai Ikada, on Twitter.
Hokkaido Gyaru Bring Smiles
Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! begins with a regular guy who meets up with a gyaru in the snow. Tsubasa Shiki (voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki) moved from Tokyo to Kitami, a city in Hokkaido. His father’s job transferred him there, and Tsubasa followed along. He was also keen to travel because he wasn’t very popular in Tokyo, and he was often bullied.
Tsubasa arrived in Kitami during the winter, and met the main gyaru of the series Minami Fuyuki (voiced by Ayane Sakura) on the side of the road. He was out of sorts in the country, and she was happy to offer some guidance. Tsubasa was quick to notice that she dressed lightly for the weather, and realized that she was a gyaru. No pants, the first couple of buttons of her shirt were open, and no gloves because they would interfere with phone use. Yes, Minami was a dosanko gyaru no matter the time or weather.
Sparks begin to fly just as the bus arrives that would take Tsubasa to his destination. Unfortunately, her beauty stuns him long enough for her to leave on the bus without him. Fortunately, they go to the same school, so their romantic encounters are far from over. He’ll also meet a couple of other cute girls who feel butterflies when they meet him. There’s the cute introvert Sayuri Akino (voiced by Yumiri Hanamori), and the upperclassman who Minami idolizes, Rena Natsukawa (voiced by Reina Ueda).
Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! Origins
Kai Ikada, who was born and raised in Kitami, is the writer and artist of the series. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! was initially a nineteen-page one-shot titled Instant Gal Menko-chan in 2018. A different one-shot was published in 2019 as part of a Shonen Jump+ New Year event. The series was picked up for full serialization due to its sheer popularity. People really like cute gyaru, it seems. Eleven volumes have been published since the full run began on September 4th, 2019.
As an aside, the original Japanese title Dosanko Gyaru wa Namaramenkoi has a number of references in it. Dosanko is a nickname for people who come from Hokkaido, namara is a Hokkaido dialect word meaning “very” or “super,” and menkoi is a word from the Hokkaido dialect that means “cute” or “adorable.” We all know what gyaru means, that shouldn’t have to be explained.
As cute as Minami Fuyuki is, we mustn’t forget the top-tier gyaru cosplayer, Marin Kitagawa. For those who agree, the J-List shop can help you fondly remember that famous swimsuit. The Marin Kitagawa 1/7 Figure Swimsuit Ver. from the My Dress-Up Darling section is now available for pre-order.
