With the English dub of Cells at Work! just announced at Anime Expo, and work on Season 2 of the series already underway since March, it looks like the team at David Production is kicking back and having some summer fun. But how is the team having fun and keeping safe under the summer sun, you ask? By teaming up with Pocari Sweat!
David Production and Otsuka Pharmaceutical, the company that produces Pocari Sweat, have lent their talents to a Very Special Episode version of Season 1, Episode 11, “Heatstroke.” Known as Episode 11.5, “Heatstroke—If There Was Pocari Sweat,” the episode was created to increase the public’s awareness of heatstroke, as well as highlight the importance of taking preventative measures against heatstroke. This special episode also includes the return of the original cast, including Hanazawa Kana as Red Blood Cell, Tomono Maeno as White Blood Cell, Maria Nagano as Platelet, and Mami Noto as Narrator, among others.
Both Kodansha’s editor for Cells at Work! and a representative of Otsuka Pharmaceutical tasked with overseeing the collaboration released statements about the project and their hopes for its success:
“Special tag of Pocari Sweat and Cells at Work! was realized, and it became a very fun movie. I think that drawing Pocari Sweat in the form of a spaceship from the outside world using the design of the bottle is also perfect for the original cartoon’s world view. The highlight is the ceremonies of the Captain of the sweat glands that made [the] Gag Scene and [the] product compatible. Let’s do heat stroke measures with appropriate fluid and electrolyte supply and have a pleasant summer.”
“Otsuka went [for] the appeal of ‘the importance of water-electrolyte replenishment’ in various scenes from the beginning Pocari Sweat released. Even now, we are actively providing information on heatstroke countermeasures in various scenes, such as [for] children and the elderly, occupational safety, and health at work. Through this collaboration, we hope that more people will know more about heatstroke, fluid and electrolyte supply, and hope that the number of people suffering from heatstroke will decrease.”
The special episode can be viewed below in Japanese, along with stills from the episode. My favorite character happens to be the Captain of the sweat glands, with those little Pocari Sweat bottles hanging from his hat. And while you’re all hopefully taking measures against heatstroke this summer, you can always stay inside and make sure your cells stay nice and refreshed with some nice cool drinks from J-List. Whether you want to go traditional with a nice refreshing glass of mugicha, or barley tea, amp up your summer gaming with a super concentrated version of Monster, or make a nice big pitcher of Pocari Sweat, you can be assured that any drink you choose from J-List will do your body good.
