Women’s History Month calls for us to honor and remember historic women. We cultured otaku do this to remember our favorite anime waifu. There are plenty of truly legendary anime waifus who have left their marks on anime history. They’re beloved years or even decades after they first appeared on our screens. Let’s count down some of the most popular waifus from the past few decades as determined by MyAnimeList’s rating system. We’ll go from oldest to newest.
The First of the Mecha Anime Waifus Sayla Mass (Mobile Suit Gundam)

Sayla Mass is one of the classic waifus who owned the 1970s. She ranks among the legendary anime waifus as a mobile suit pilot and a fierce soldier in the One Year War. Sayla was born Artesia Som Deikun, the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun and the sister of Casval Rem Deikun. Her father’s assassination led her to change her name to Sayla, whereas her brother chose the name Char Aznable. They both fought during the war and left their marks on history as Gundam pilots.
The Genius Anime Waifu Who Started the Adventure Bulma Brief (Dragon Ball )

Bulma is one of an otaku’s first anime waifus. She stole our hearts during the 1980s. Being as smart as Vegeta is strong, she is definitely a legendary anime waifu worth honoring. She flew a spaceship at age five and discovered time travel years later. Bulma’s desire for the titular Dragon Balls started Goku’s legendary adventures. It can be said that she’s the most important character in the series. She’s the Best Girl, fight me in the arena. Bulma deserves her own Women’s History Month.
The Amnesiac Femme Fatale Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)

Faye is like a rose, equal parts beautiful and deadly. This anime waifu with a gun and an attitude ran the ship in the 1990s. Faye is also vain and proud to flaunt what makes her so proud. She barked loudly and bit hard to hide her more vulnerable side, borne of a lost and tragic past. This cowboy stands as a truly legendary anime waifu with absolutely no live-action adaptation to her name. None. Didn’t happen.
The Anime Waifu Who Keeps the Hero Moving Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Winry is a tough mechanic and surgeon who literally keeps her future husband on his feet and in the fight. Her tomboy attitude and her tank tops caught our attention in the 2000s. She followed her parents’ ideals to help people wherever she could and thus entered the medical field. Winry finds herself in more danger than one would expect of an automail mechanic, even facing down her parents’ murderer, but she has two powerful alchemists at her back. This series has some fine blonde waifus. Winry, Riza, and Olivier are all top tier.
The Most Vicious of Assassin Anime Waifus Machi Komacine (Hunter × Hunter)

Machi is — much like her comrades in the Phantom Troupe — a merciless killer. This ninja girl tied us up tight in the 2010s. She uses her Nen Stitches to ensnare or kill her targets with near-invisible threads. Her rough upbringing turned her into the cold and determined fighter that she is today. That’s not to say she lacks a heart, she mourns for her friends and remains steadfast for her leader.
The Immortal Hero Waifu Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End)
Frieren is one of a handful of legendary anime waifus and a legendary hero in her own world. This cute elf girl enchanted us in the 2020s. She traveled with the great hero Himmel to save the world. Her journey didn’t end there, however. As an elf, she ages far slower than her comrades. That fact didn’t really resonate with her until Himmel passed away from old age. Frieren realized that she truly did care for him. She set out on a new adventure to see him again.
