What anime has made you laugh the most? For me it was Kaguya: Love is War. I laughed so hard I woke up Mrs. J-List, and we watched the show together. When I asked J-List’s Twitter followers what anime made them laugh, I got a lot of great responses. So here we go with the 11 top comedy anime that will make you laugh like a fool.
Our Top Comedy Anime Picks
Seitokai Yakuindomo
The classic shimoneta (low sexual humor) anime based on a 4-koma manga about an all-girl’s high school that recently started allowing boys into the school, Seitokai Yakuindomo (“Those Annoying Student Council Members”) is literally nothing but sexual jokes, as every female character tries to get a rise out of the two “straight men” in the show, Tsuda and Hagimura. It’s brilliant.
Nichijou: My Daily Life
A well-regarded 24-episode gag anime by Kyoto Animation, Nichijou can’t really be explained, only experienced. Some of their joke set-ups are among the funniest moments in anime. Which is your favorite segment?
(By an odd coincidence, Nichijou is set in J-List’s home town of Isesaki. Mrs. J-List even went to the high school they used in the anime.)
Daily Life of High School Boys
Another slice-of-life with lots of quality jokes, Danshi Kousei no Iru Nichijou succeeds on the quality of its writing and its gags.
Hitori Bocchi’s ○○ Lifestyle
The newest “cute shy girl tries to overcome her social awkwardness” anime to come along, Hitori Bocchi’s ○○ Lifestyle succeeds with its charming characters who all bring different kinds of amusing social baggage with them to school.
The Devil is a Part-Timer
Probably the one anime that deserves a second season more than any other, The Devil is a Part-Timer is a “reverse isekai” story about characters coming from a fantasy world into our own world. The demon king Sadao Maoh is doing battle with the Hero Emilia, and both end up trapped in Tokyo. To make a living, he starts working at McDonald’s MgRonald, while she gets a job in a Japanese company as an OL. My favorite scene is where he plots to take over our world by joining the MgRonald full-time manager’s training program.
Sabagebu: Survive Game Club
Another truly fresh and hilarious anime, Sabagebu is a top comedy anime about the members of a school’s survival game club. It’s loaded with violence and blood, but it’s all “fantasy” blood based on the imaginations of the characters.
Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san
Another anime I enjoyed thoroughly was Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san (Skilled Teaser Takagi-san), about a super-smart girl who loves a boy named Nishikata, and trolls him endlessly to get him to notice she likes him. Each segment ends the same, but seeing how it unfolds is always hilarious.
B Gata H Kei
Called Yamada’s First Time in English, this is the story of a girl who wants to lose her virginity with another virgin, so she approaches Kosuda and says, “You’re a cherry boy, right? You’ve been selected to be the first boy to get on top of me!” It naturally doesn’t go that smoothly, and much laughter is had as the two young people try to successfully lose their virginity together. It’s one of the few anime that might be better dubbed in English than in Japanese. It’s one of the top comedy anime shows you could watch.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!
One of the most successful isekai anime series, KoboSuba has it all: great characters, hilarious storylines, and high-quality animation. Go watch it.
Lucky Star
We take the current era of anime that “gets” fan culture for granted today, but before Lucky Star came along and successfully created the perfect anime of otakus, by otakus, and for otakus, it had never been done. Make sure you watch this top comedy anime if you haven’t yet.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War
Finally, one of the most entertaining series in years is Kaguya-sama: Love is War, about a boy and girl in high school who love each other, but each is determined to make the other confess their feelings first… so they can never be together. The episode where Kaguya-sama misunderstands what a “first experience” means is my favorite, but almost all the episodes are pure gold.
