Hololive fan games are shaping up to be truly special. Recently, HoloCure: Save the Fans! took the community by storm with its fun roguelike elements. Now, a new game has entered the fray. Developed by the Besto Game Team — and they’re determined to earn that “besto” developer label — Idol Showdown is a 2D fighting game starring some of Hololive’s most well-known and beloved VTubers. For those who missed her, the yakuza dragon herself, Kiryu Coco, is in the game as a main playable fighter.
The game is available now absolutely free on Steam. Here’s a brief launch trailer to give you an idea of how it plays.
You can find out more about the game on the Steam page, as well as their official Idol Showdown Twitter page. Besto Game Team has also released some promotional art material and key visuals to further entice fans of VTubers and fighting games.
The full roster of playable characters is as follows:
- Aki Rosenthal
- Nakiri Ayame
- Shishiro Botan
- Kiryu Coco
- Shirakami Fubuki
- Inugami Korone
- Tokino Sora
- Hoshimachi Suisei
The rest of the VTubers are considered “collab” characters, support units who appear to perform a skill and depart. Like their mainline counterparts, they too are fully voiced.
- Amane Kanata
- Watson Amelia
- Houshou Marine
- Kazama Iroha
- Ookami Mio
- Roboco-san
- Sakura Miko
- Takanashi Kiara
While fans are sure to enjoy the game, what do the VTubers themselves think? Well, like with HoloCure: Save the Fans!, they absolutely love it. Kureiji Ollie, who appears as part of the shop menu, has in fact voiced herself in the game.
Korone noticed the full voice acting and reacted in the cutest and most appropriate manner possible. I wonder if she would want to jump into a booth and voice her in-game counterpart. She did enjoy her moveset and outfits, after all.
Mori Calliope and Tsunomaki Watame threw down the gauntlet while imitating Kiryu Coco.
It’s not known if anyone else voiced their in-game versions or if voice clips were taken from streams. Regardless, Korone and Sora definitely enjoyed their time while playing the game on stream as well. Sora was surprised to hear herself in Idol Showdown, and Korone thought that her in-game counterpart sounded cuter.
Likewise, Botan and IRyS both seemed to enjoy playing the game and seeing how the VTuber fighters performed in Idol Showdown.
The VTubers themselves enjoy the game, so it’s likely that their legions of fans will as well. Considering the game is absolutely free, plenty of those fans have most certainly downloaded it and immediately proceeded to try out Kiryu Coco just out of nostalgia and a longing for the graduated dragon girl.
If you’re someone who was disappointed that Marine is only a collab character and not a mainline fighter, we share that pain, and we have a recommendation to ease your worries. The Houshou Marine Figma Action Figure from the J-List Store’s Hololive Production section is available now for pre-order. You can buy that and watch I’m Your Treasure Box for the hundredth time.
Will you be playing Idol Showdown? Which fighter will be your main unit? Which Hololive VTuber would you like to see the developers at Besto Game Team add to the roster? Let us know in the comments below.
