Discussing Swords & Slippers, a Cultured Fairy Tale Adventure

Snow White Has Never Looked Better

Fairy tales are always fun media to explore epic tales. Putting a new twist on a time-honored story is interesting to watch. The Mass Creation developers, out of Poland, have delivered what I’m positive will be a popular and successful entry in this tradition. Swords & Slippers is a hack-and-slash indie game that puts players in the roles of different fairy tale heroines. Snow White is the star right now since the game is still in early development. What we have seen so far shows considerable potential, and I’m convinced it will be an incredible game to behold once it’s complete.

Development Updates

For full transparency, I temporarily became a supporter of Mass Creation on Patreon to gain access to the Swords & Slippers beta build, which allows special menu commands. It was the best $10 I ever spent and well worth it to see this game in action. One of those commands allowed me to edit Snow White’s figure, and you can see her assets look pushed to their maximum, above. Appreciate the jiggle physics at work. These are cultured devs, my friends.

Many of these updates can be found on their Twitter/X page. There’s a new bikini outfit, and it’s more magical than it appears. They’ve also shown off how their outfit system works. The famous Fairy Godmother will also make a tantalizing appearance at some point. These fine developers have been at this for a while. “The journey started over a decade ago — no jokes here. The earliest version of what would eventually become (or is becoming) Swords & Slippers began as an insurgent spark back in 2013, though it has taken many forms (and names) along the way.”

Snow White Rules All

The Swords & Slippers Patreon has frequent game updates and plenty of in-game lore, such as an explanation of the game’s title. The devs include development process updates. It was all fascinating reading. I won’t speak on what I read, as much of it is behind a paywall. However, the developers gave us some insight into how Snow White came to be. “Swords & Slippers has been through a lot of transformations. It’s the result of many years (and many notebooks) filled with quirky, gloomy, grim fairytale sketches, discarded prototypes, and late-night bursts of madcap invention.”

“The earliest spark came from a simple inversion: what if the stories we grew up on weren’t heroic, but propaganda? […] Over time, it evolved — from dark, brooding fantasy to something more playful, fast-paced, and emotionally charged.”

“Eventually, we realized what we really wanted: a mix of action, attitude, and character. Something where you could slash through armies one moment and appreciate your favourite princess, who turned out to be a rebel, the next. Chaos, charm, and truth to its origin (a real origin) — that’s what Swords & Slippers is.”

Swords & Slippers Brings Hard-Hitting Gameplay

The gameplay is pretty solid at this stage. Snow White’s strikes have believable weight behind them, and each hit was satisfying to pull off. None of the enemies could be defeated in the build I played on, but I understand that they go down in newer builds. The enemies were still fun to fight. The brute enemies were especially engaging and difficult to knock down. I needed to plan my moves or I’d get juggled by brutes and grunts.

The art style has been so epic and cultured that many have mistaken Swords & Slippers for a Japanese-made game. No Western studio would dare to make Snow White this hot. “You’re not the first to say that — and honestly? We kinda get it. Once we went viral, we were actually mistaken for being a Japanese studio. That wasn’t planned, but we do take it as a weirdly flattering side effect of leaning into bold aesthetics, expressive characters, and combat that doesn’t give a shit about being full of flair.”

“About the anime vibe, that’s the result of Western studios that stop second-guessing and make the kind of game that we want to see. Wild, sexy, action-packed, and character-first. […] So yeah — no anime in our references. But if someone out there sees Snow White and thinks she looks like she stepped out of an anime… we’re not exactly mad about it.”

A Fairy Tale Conclusion

That wrapped up our interview. Swords & Slippers is shaping up to be a stellar game, and I can’t wait to see what they add to it next. What do you think of Swords & Slippers? Do you like edgy and cultured takes on fairy tales? Who is your favorite fairy tale waifu? Let us know in the comments below.
