Mamoru Hosoda’s newest anime film Mirai was announced as one of the nominees for the 76th Annual Golden Awards under the Best Motion Picture – Animated category. This was released on Thursday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Aside from Mirai, other nominations include Ralph Breaks the Internet, Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The film is also nominated for next year’s 46th Annual Annie Awards for Best Animated Independent Feature and Outstanding Achievement for Writing and Animated Feature Production categories.
Mirai centers on a spoiled four-year-old boy named Kun-chan whose life changed forever when his little sister named Mirai came into the family. Overwhelmed with the feeling that her sister is getting all the love and attention, he suddenly meets the older version of Mirai, who actually came from the future!
The film officially opened in Japan last July 20 and immediately peaked at #2 at the box office. The official world premiere happened last May at this year’s Directors’ Fortnight which is an independent event that happened together with the Cannes Film Festival.
