Who knew the school camping trip would double as the hot springs episode? Dare to test your courage!
Lesson 4 — “A Weak and Wimpy School Camp”
Hmm.
Why do anime characters tell the audience their plans when we already know they’ll end up in belly-aching disaster? No, it’s not because scriptwriters are sadists (maybe, could be, probably, I hope not). One facet of humor originates from making the brain’s pattern-recognition reflex make a left turn at Albuquerque. Comedy subverts expectations. Then you laugh! Let me explain how Episode 4 of Yowayowa Sensei throws breaking balls at its main character and the audience.

Broken Plans Break Brains in Yowayowa Sensei
Jokes contain the best short story writing ever. In only a few words, a listener imagines the scene of an everyday occurrence, expects an outcome, and a punchline arrives from an orthogonal dimension, causing a rift in the little universe’s space-time continuum. You (literally) did not see the joke’s delivery coming. Laughter is the body’s involuntary response to a short circuit in logic. Sitcoms like Yowayowa Sensei thrive on those setups. However, it’s also fun to watch a story’s characters deal with those unexpected wrenches thrown into their best-laid plans. We’re taking a left turn at Albuquerque to compare anime to the masters of thwarted plans: Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner!

Did you watch those Looney Tunes cartoons as early morning reruns before going to school? Those cartoons pitting Wile E. Coyote (genius, it’s on his business card) and the Road Runner taught me how single-minded plans often fail. I saw Coyote assemble complicated machines for even more convoluted plots to capture the Road Runner. Then I saw his lack of improvisational skills for the smallest of deviations from his plans. That comedy formula exists in Yowayowa Sensei, too, but rather than seeing Acme rockets blow up in a desert scavenger’s face, we watch naked boobs land on a high school boy’s!
Roadrunner Logic and the Power of Love

Thankfully for an ecchi comedy anime, Akihito Abikura is not Wile E. Coyote. The boy can turn a painted tunnel on a canyon wall into an indoor Test of Courage! Yowayowa Sensei took a right turn at Albuquerque and arrived at its happy ending. Granted, our hero’s plans to paint Hiyori-sensei in a better light faced setbacks. Still, his schoolmates recognized the effort she had put into the jump-scare props.
Talk about subverted expectations. Hiyori-sensei won’t stay Spooky-Scary Sensei forever, but the progress will be like molasses dripping from a spoon. And Yowayowa Sensei’s dojikko-moe-lucky-sukebe punchlines are much better than Wile E. Coyote going splat after falling from a canyon cliff.
Yowayowa Sensei Makes Me Say Heh.

Akihito had a detailed plan to help his schoolmates see Hiyori-sensei’s caring and devoted qualities. But even his first agenda item for another student sitting next to her on a long bus ride failed. She also got carsick, and hiking unsurprisingly tired her out. Still, Akihito earned rewards for sticking close to her. Yowayowa Sensei flashed him her wet T-shirt and let him listen to her pee behind a tree! The Weak and Wimpy Teacher has a weak bladder!

Here we go! The gods of ecchi comedy repaid Akihito’s hard work and frustration by trapping him in the outdoor bath during the women’s bathing time! How can Hiyori-sensei rescue him without the other girls finding out about a boy peeping at them?

Mizuki enjoys her time in the bath, but how do you distract her and the other girls so Akihito can sneak away? Surely, girl talk can do the trick in a Yowayowa Sensei episode. Mizuki needs to hug Yuuki to stop talking about a certain boy she might like. What about Hiyorin? Does she have relationship experience? Oops. She froze while trying to hide Akihito, but it turned her into Kowakowa-sensei from Yowayowa-sensei. Here comes another reward for Akihito: dojikko-moe-lucky-sukebe strikes again. Thankfully, the other girls ran away, so discovering him in the women’s bath is an expected event for Yuuki and Mizuki.
Closets, Spit, and Yowayowa Sensei

That’s enough for the audience. Let’s get back to the drama attached to changing Hiyori-sensei’s reputation during the Test of Courage. The detailed horror props will not help! Eek! More lucky-sukebe! Akihito and Hiyori-sensei hid in the closet to hide from the tipsy gym teacher. Hidden sex tag — checked off. They were meeting innocently as teacher and class president, so this was unnecessary. Har! Hiyori-sensei thinks she’s practicing for jump-scaring!

The Yowayowa Sensei intermission cards highlight key moments from the episode. Whose thumb is she sucking on? (We know, we know.)

Ah. Akihito slices vegetables, so I expect he’ll cut himself to explain why Hiyori-sensei sucks on his thumb. She’s the most scared of knives and fire! The students should handle the duties of preparing meals themselves. But their supervising teacher is weak in the face of Yuuki’s begging. Oho. Akihito wanted to see Hiyori-sensei in an apron! Hey, armpit fans, calm down. Yowayowa Sensei is generous to degenerates… uh, anime fans of culture. Um, is the Weak and Wimpy Teacher even strong enough to cut a potato? Akihito should have paid more attention to his own knife skills. At least his concerns rewarded him with a warm, wet mouth. Oh no, and hahaha! The other students thought Hiyori-sensei tried to eat his thumb for a human sacrifice!
Scared Straight: Yowayowa Sensei Edition

And here’s your drama for the Yowayowa Sensei episode — rain canceled the Test of Courage event. Hiyori-sensei’s devoted work was all for naught! She looked forward to entertaining her students so much! But a hero arose. Akihito organized an indoor Test of Courage with the hotel staff! It’s more like a haunted house, but still! Mizuki and Yuuki took full advantage of Yuuki’s collection of cosplay outfits. The sight brought Hiyori-sensei to tears of joy. The Spooky-Scary Sensei was the scariest monster of all!

After all that happened in Yowayowa Sensei, Akihito had to write an apology letter, and Hiyori-sensei called him outside to thank him. Uh oh! Accidental love confession! Akihito’s plans to seduce a 22-year-old teacher will have to wait even longer. Well, at least Hiyori-sensei admitted she liked him back, as a student. Bittersweet! Perfect timing. Dojikko-moe-lucky-sukebe struck Akihito instead of Hiyori-sensei.
Yowayowa Sensei (Yowa Yowa Sensei) streams uncensored on Hidive in Japanese audio and English subtitles.
I love how Yowayowa Sensei takes the “best-laid plans go splat” formula from the Roadrunner cartoons and runs it through a dojikko-moe-lucky-sukebe filter. Wasn’t it a tad early for the hot springs episode? Does that mean there are even more ecchi situations in store? What would you do if you were hiding in a closet with Hiyori-sensei?
