The years truly fly. It feels like yesterday that we smuggled our Nintendo DS under the covers to boot up Pokémon Black and White, and make the choice between Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott. With Pokémon Black and White celebrating their 15th anniversary since their Japanese release, we thought it’d be a great time to dive into Pokémon cosplay featuring Black and White’s Hilda and Rosa!
Sure, you could argue that Rosa doesn’t truly belong on this list — at least, not until Black 2 and White 2 come around for their own anniversaries. But there’s no way we could deprive our loyal readers of saucy Pokémon cosplays (and hey, they’re basically the same games anyway!) Besides, Hilda and Rosa are linked not only as protagonists of Generation V, but also in their appearances and roles in fixing the troubled land of Unova.
So join us today on the J-List blog as we celebrate 15 years of Pokémon Black and White, and catch ’em all with Hilda and Rosa cosplay.
Unova’s Pokémon and Hilda Cosplay
Pokémon Black and White slid into our Nintendo DS way back in 2010, introducing players to 156 new ‘mon in the Unova region, an area modeled after New York City. The playable female character for Black and White is the lovely Hilda, a girl who’s extremely popular among fan artists and cosplayers!
Hilda is often called ‘White’, and fans have chosen her as the representative of Pokémon White. Disappointingly for Grass- and Water-type fans, Hilda’s canonical starter choice is the Fire-type Tepig. How that lil’ guy doesn’t instantly turn into crispy bacon is a mystery to us, but then again, Pokémon isn’t known for its logical consistency.
It’s hard to find Generation V-themed merch these days. Still, if you’re a Pokémon fan, you probably have multiple generations you love! Over at the J-List store, we have plenty of Pokémon figures and hentai doujinshi!

The Sexiest Cosplay of Hilda from Pokémon Black and White
While our legal team battens down the hatches in case this cosplay post kicks a certain hornet’s nest (and not the Silksong kind), let’s talk about what makes Hilda such a fantastic character!
Full of pep and ready to take on the world, Hilda eventually attains a legendary status by the time of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. With Generation V being the first generation of Pokémon to receive a direct sequel, it’s so cool that all our time spent with Hilda makes her such a legend.
These cosplayers have taken Hilda’s sexy, outdoorsy energy to the extreme, focusing on her ripped jeans and signature cap — distinctive callbacks to Unova’s NYC-inspired setting.

Pokémon White 2: Electric Boogaloo
Launching for the Nintendo DS in 2012, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 drop players into a much-changed Unova. Pokémon foreign to the region are now playable, and the entire game has better graphics and UI; if you play on a DSi or 3DS, the game has some additional enhancements.
Rosa is our female protagonist this time, and has an entirely different design from Hilda. Wearing gorgeous tights and a frilly skirt, Rosa is less of a “tough gal” and more of a fashionista ready to catch ’em all. Her canonical starter choice is the Grass-type Snivy, which this writer maintains is the superior choice. All comments that disagree with this pick are wrong.

We Interrupt Pokémon Black and White Cosplay for a Linguistics Lesson
Since we’re discussing the Japanese anniversary of these games, there’s some interesting trivia surrounding the names Hilda and Rosa.
Names are everything in Pokémon, from electric mice to main characters. Hilda’s Japanese name is “Touko” from the kanji for “fight.” Her English name, “Hilda,” was chosen from the Germanic root word “hild,” meaning “battle.” This fits into Black and White‘s opposing themes of truth and ideals, and confronting the real world (the idea that things are not always ‘Black and White’).
Rosa, meanwhile, is named “Mei” in Japanese from kyoumei, meaning “resonance” — and her English name comes directly from that translation. The sequel is focused on the idea of technology versus tradition, and on the harmony — or resonance — between two opposing ideologies.
Who knew that Pokémon could hide such deep meanings in the protagonist’s names?!
