Godannar (pronounced “Go Dannar”) has the frenetic tempo and over-the-top action of FLCL and Dandadan, with the comfy, awkward family vibes of Spy X Family. I did not expect adult conversations about marriage roles with my copious shots of jiggle physics!

Pacific Rim, but with a Secret Marriage
Godannar and Pacific Rim are both about giant robots piloted by daring cover models. The giant robots fight colossal monsters, there’s some relationship drama, and lots of water. In Godannar, there’s a secret marriage and Idris Elba is a hot MILF. Synopsis done!
Okay, seriously. Ace pilot Goh Saruwatari falls in love with Anna Aoi (whose mother is the well-endowed Idris Elba). The lovebirds get married, but complications (relationship drama and skyscraper-squishing monsters) arise to keep the story going. Who cares about the details! You don’t need to hear them from me since there are two thirteen-episode seasons of Godannar to watch instead.

Godannar and Anime Speed Dating
So, I’m not reviewing Godannar.
J-List anime reviews are the speed dating of watching anime. You give us five minutes of your time; we give you several reasons to get into bed with the featured anime. If we pique your interest, you’ll watch a few episodes and decide whether to stick with the anime or not. The commitment is up to you.

A whole season’s run of an anime is a big commitment for an anime fan. You’ve got many shows vying for your attention, not only from the current season, but also from a backlog that’s as long as Reika Shimohira’s legs.
Godannar is 22 years old. At this point, reviewing Godannar would be like speed dating an old friend. Instead, let me be the buddy reminding you of the eligible head-turner right under your nose.
Godannar and the Good Gifts of Gravity
I get the feeling that the animators had a blast making Godannar. The evidence is in its jiggle physics. Godannar’s animators used gravity for gags, not just to please horny male fans. They had fun.

They had fun, which makes Godannar a pleasure to watch. Godannar doesn’t take things too seriously but delivers pure, unpretentious entertainment. Although you couldn’t call Godannar a masterwork, all the pieces — the animation, the soundtrack, characterization, writing, et cetera — work together like a garage band with enough talent to draw a crowd. It gets by because it has a good time.
Watch Godannar Already
Some reviewers said Godannar had an old-school look when it came out in 2003, but it’s not dated in 2025. Godannar is a neck-tie-off kind of anime, but it’s not brain-dead either. Sure. It has its flaws, but you might find yourself having too much fun to notice.
Studios OLM and AIC ASTA produced Godannar (or Marriage of God & Soul Godannar!!) under the direction of Yasuchika Nagaoka. Hiroyuki Kawasaki wrote it with Chumei Watanabe composing the anime’s music.
You can find Godannar on Prime Video and Apple TV+. Godannar gets four fun-loving Megumis who are, as we speak, bouncing happily up and down. Never interrupt the bouncing.
Why do mech pilots wear such alluring suits? I’m sure it has something to do with temperature control and blunt force trauma. Give us your thoughts in the comments!
