Why Do Some Anime Get New Seasons and Others Don’t?
I love social media because it allows me to hang out with a few thousand anime fans on X, Facebook, Instagram and Threads simultaneously. It’s great to toss out a question and get a dozen or so replies…or even hundreds, if it’s a topic anime fans feel especially strongly about. I asked J-List customers what anime deserves a second season, and got a lot of feedback, which we’ll explore in this blog post!
But first, let’s look at why some anime series are rewarded with additional seasons (or OAVs, or movies) while others are forgotten by IP holders, despite resonating with fans.
- Anime series are made by “production committees,” which are holding companies created so that several companies can invest, bringing their unique skills to the project while spreading risk around. A typical anime production committee might include an animation studio, a streaming platform like Netflix or Disney+, the publisher of the manga or light novel the anime is based on, plus a company like Aniplex, to harass YouTubers who share clips of the anime online (ha-ha). The first anime work created under this system was Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, in response to the financial failure of Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, which nearly bankrupted the studio.
- Traditionally, Blu-ray sales have driven new seasons of anime, because the studios have received the biggest slice of income from media sales. If the fans don’t show up to buy those gorgeous limited Blu-rays, it usually means a second season won’t get made. Increasingly, anime studios are getting more and more of their income from streaming platforms. Sadly, this means that studios with too-sexy-for-streaming back catalogs tend to go bankrupt at an alarming rate.
- Anime creators must know that fans often demand a second season and then fail to support it when it arrives. If they think this will happen, they might happily leave well-enough alone.
- Some anime series get embraced by figure collectors, who buy many figures from their favorite shows. Ikki Tousen and Date A Live are two shows that have been driven almost entirely by the popularity of figures. As an anime retailer, I love this trend!
