Everyone’s favorite ghostbusting doggo is heading to Japan! Cartoon Network’s Scooby-Doo spin-off series Go-Go Mystery Machine will feature Shaggy, Scooby, and plenty of youkai. The cowardly twosome is set to team up with new friends Daisuke-Doo (Scooby’s uncle), spell slinger Etsuko, and gearhead Toshiro.
Can Anime Save Scooby-Doo?
Anime’s global popularity likely helped greenlight this project. Could an anime version — a first for the crime-busting friends — keep Scooby-Doo relevant?
Although Scooby-Doo represents a massive multimedia entity, the Warner Bros. franchise has recently been plagued by problems. Three shows were canceled between 2022 and 2023, including two films and a TV series. One of the shows, the 2022 Scoob! Holiday Haunt, was completed but never released.
This means that Go-Go Mystery Machine could be the first new Scooby-Doo show since the maligned Velma. Max’s Velma has 1.6 stars out of ten on the rating aggregate site IMDB. That’s worse than Dragon Ball Evolution’s 2.5 rating! Will Go-Go Mystery Machine turn things around for Scooby and the gang? Can I say “and the gang” while writing about any other franchise? Likely not! Here’s hoping for good things.
Yes, but Is It Anime?
I hear teeth grinding. Of course, there’s anime, and then there’s anime. Never confuse the two. However, light, Western-produced anime might just be the thing to get more people to watch true anime. Ultimately, that would mean more money for the shows we love. So let the kids have their fun.
