We cultured otaku know about May 10th. Maid Day comes about because you can pronounce “10” as “doh” in Japanese. “May-doh” becomes “meido” or “Maid.” We celebrated this event last year, and we’re doing it again this year. This day belongs to the beautiful maids of anime.
1. Mahoro Andou (Mahoromatic)
Mahoro is a powerful android from VESPER using Saint technology to fight the Saints during their invasion of Earth. Though her mission was successful, she had only 398 days to live due to her artificial nature. Mahoro decided to spend the rest of her days serving Suguru Misato — the son of her fallen commander — as his maid.
Bunjuro Nakayama and Bow Ditama created the original Mahoromatic manga series between December 1998 and July 26th, 2004. Wani Books published all eight volumes in Comic Gum.
2. Saber (Carnival Phantasm)
The King of Knights becomes the cutest maid. Saber takes a job at the multi-dimensional café Ahnenerbe. The task proved more than she expected, and the different Fate characters didn’t make it any easier for her.
Type-Moon, led by Kinoko Nasu, released the first Fate/stay night as an adult visual novel on January 30th, 2004. The studio released toned-down versions later, allowing it to reach general audiences.
3. Kaho Hinata (Blend S)
Kaho works at the maid café Stile. The maids there have unique traits to act out for the customers. Though Kaho is the tsundere of the team, she is more of a carefree girl. Her persona breaks whenever she hears people discussing video games because she also enjoys video games.
Miyuki Nakayama developed the original Blend S 4-koma manga from October 2013 to June 2022. Houbunsha published all eight volumes in Manga Time Kirara Carat.
4. Virgo (Fairy Tail)
Virgo is one of the more powerful maids in anime. She’s a Celestial Spirit in service to Lucy Heartfilia. Though Virgo takes her duties very seriously, her hidden masochistic nature can make itself known. Even if she does a good job, she’ll ask for punishment. A good master or mistress would grant her request.
Hiro Mashima began to write and illustrate the series on August 2nd, 2006. Kodansha has since released 78 volumes across the different Fairy Tail manga series.
5. Lilia Greyrat (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation)
Lilia trained to become the perfect guard-maid for the Asura royal family. An assassin’s poisoned knife crippled her leg, which made it impossible to carry out her duties. The royals fired her, and Paul Greyrat, a classmate from a sword dojo, hired her. Lilia would become his second wife and the mother of his child.
Rifujin na Magonote posted the original Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation novel on the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro between November 22nd, 2012, and April 3rd, 2015. Media Factory obtained the publishing rights and hired the artist Shirotaka to adapt the series to a light novel format. The MF Books imprint published 25 volumes from January 24th, 2014, to November 25th, 2022.
