Final Fantasy XIV is getting a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) Starter Set this year. It’s a first for the franchise, which turns 37 this year.
I’m taking bets — there will be a Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End tabletop roleplaying game within the next two years. How do I know? Dungeons & Dragons reignited the hobby years ago. Then, after several blunders last year, creator company Wizards of the Coast lost that head of steam. Despite working to rejuvenate their game with a new D&D edition in 2024, D&D’s large following isn’t as loyal as they were. Competing roleplaying publishers know this. Although they’ve always clawed for popular franchises to turn into the next Alien or Lord of the Rings tabletop adaptation, the D&D giant lies hamstrung on the floor now. These next two years are important if they want to net new fans.
Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG Starter Set coming May 2024
“Based on the hit MMO Final Fantasy XIV, the FFXIV TTRPG is a tabletop roleplaying game that lets you experience Eorzea from a whole new perspective.
“Step into the shoes of a heroic adventurer or assume the game master’s mantle, then cooperate to forge your own unique stories within the vast and exciting universe of Final Fantasy XIV.”
The Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG Starter Set looks to have everything you need to play (save for friends and time). There’s a Players Book, a Gamemaster Book, tokens, and an encounter map. Players have four full-color character sheets from which to choose, featuring a Warrior, White Mage, Dragoon, and Black Mage. No tabletop enthusiast would be happy without custom dice, and the box set is packed with six and twenty-sided dice. That’s sixteen dice in all! Let the good times roll.
The official release date at the time of writing is May 2024. That gives you enough time to find four meat-space friends to join you on your quest into the heart of Eorzea.
Digital Dreams of Final Fantasies
From day one — which was December 18th, 1987 — the Final Fantasy franchise has been a digital one. Created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and published by Square Enix (then Square), the seminal JRPG series grew to gain global popularity. 37 years after the first game, we’re on Final Fantasy XVI. That’s a true test of our ability to read roman numerals! (XVI is 16, friends).
My first experience of the series was on the PlayStation, with Final Fantasy VII. It defeated me 27 years ago, but I still have the save game. Talk about holding onto old grudges!
The franchise has had some notable successes. For example, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (note the order of those pesky numerals) impressed fans with its level of polish. It’s ten years old this year. Well, technically. That depends on the system you’re looking at, but no need for me nerdsplaining that. The fact is that the online MMORPG — itself a relaunch of the failed 2010 Final Fantasy XIV — was a hit. The Starter Set looks to celebrate that success around the gaming table.
You can learn more about the Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG Starter Set on Square Enix’s official site or check out the game’s official webpage. A Standard Rulebook and Scenario and Gamemaster Guide are “coming soon.”
2024 is Rolling in Dice
TTRPG news site En World listed the Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG Starter Set alongside other highly anticipated TTRPG games of 2024. The list included Assassin’s Creed and Diablo RPG, two more video game-inspired titles. Is it time to ditch the Switch and roll more dice? 2024 says “yes.”
