Onmyoji is another take on the legendary mystic’s life in a fictional setting. Abe no Seimei was a real-life person and a practitioner of the onmyodo arts. He can be seen in numerous anime, manga, and video game series. This is just his most recent outing to slay demons. We’ll see how good he is when this series premieres on November 28, 2023. Netflix uploaded the trailer in English and Japanese, showcasing Marvy Jack’s adaptation.
The original novel is being written by Baku Yumemakura. Onmyoji was first released by Bungeishunju in September 1986.
The Yin-Yang Master and two of his associates are as follows:
- Abe no Seimei — Daisuke Namikawa (Adam in Nier: Automata Ver1.1a). The legendary onmyodo mystic himself. He protects the land and combats another mystic.
- Minamoto no Hiromasa — Shintaro Asanuma (Takumu Mayuzumi in Accel World). A court noble who requests Abe no Seimei’s help in contending with demons and mystical enemies that endanger the land.
- Ashiya Doman — Rina Sato (Senjumaru Shutara in Bleach). A fellow onmyodo mystic and someone familiar with Abe no Seimei. They seem to share a troubling history.
The Path of Yin and Yang
Onmyoji is set during the Heian period of Japan. It is a land of myth and magic, where spirits and demons exist. Abe no Seimei is a legendary onmyoji, a man of sage wisdom and power. Several incidents prompted the nobleman Minamoto no Hiromasa to approach Abe no Seimei for assistance. The situation seemed simple enough, but their target demon was far more powerful than they realized.
Besides their current demon problems, the onmyoji mystic Ashiya Doman has her own motives. Though Abe no Seimi and Ashiya Doman seem familiar with one another, their reunion ended with a battle of talisman vs. talisman. It’s doubtful that she will help Abe no Seimei’s and Minamoto no Hiromasa’s goal of protecting Heian-kyo and the Emperor from demons.
