It’s been a while since we discussed Gundam, so let’s enjoy ourselves. Fans who loved watching Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala fly off to battle in the early and mid-2000s may rejoice. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is a feature film after the events of Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. The new trailer highlights some of the battles Kira and his friends will face soon enough. We’ll see them in action when the movie premieres on January 26th, 2024.
Bandai Namco Filmworks has maintained a home page to promote Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, a Twitter page, and a TikTok page. There is also a primary Gundam home page for Western pilots to visit. Fans and potential viewers can find behind-the-scenes details, the key visual, and the cast of characters.
Coordinators and Naturals Take to the Stars
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is set in the Cosmic Era of the Gundam timeline. It is an era where human beings known as Coordinators are born with enhanced physical and mental abilities. Those who refuse such enhancement call themselves Naturals. Tensions and discrimination erupt into full-blown war, which drags their youngest into armed conflict.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is set after the events of the two prior seasons. Both Gilbert Durandal and his Destiny Plan will appear in the film. This is despite both of them seeing their storylines come to a close during the events of Destiny. Given that the movie’s tagline is “A decided destiny, or freedom to resist—,” fans will likely see Durandal and his Plan unfold. Kira (Soichiro Hoshi), Athrun (voiced by Akira Ishida), and Shinn (Kenichi Suzumura) will have to get the job done all over again.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Origins
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED was directed by Mitsuo Fukuda and written by Chiaki Morosawa. Sunrise aired 50 episodes from October 5th, 2002, to September 27th, 2003.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Special Edition, three films that provide an alternate retelling of the series, followed the main series. The first film, The Empty Battlefield, was released on August 27th, 2004. The second, The Far-Away Dawn, was released on September 24th, 2004. The Rumbling Sky, which premiered on October 22nd, 2004, rounded out the series.
Mitsuo Fukuda and Chiaki Morosawa returned to work on the sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. This series consisted of 50 episodes and aired between October 9th, 2004, and October 1st, 2005. Final Episode: The Chosen Future, an extended version of episode 50, closed out the series.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom was in development as far back as 2006. Chiaki Morosawa’s health halted such plans. Chiaki Morosawa sadly passed away on February 19th, 2016, due to aortic dissection. Development continued a few years after her unfortunate passing.
