It’s been 135 days since the devastating earthquake and tsunamis that brought so much sadness to Japan, and the country is still working to recover. One of our (awesome) customers named Felicia did something extraordinary: she folded senbazuru, or 1,000 origami cranes so that her prayer for the recovery of Japan might be answered. Over the past week a Japanese T-shirt designer who’s a friend of ours delivered the cranes to an elementary school in the city of called Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, an area that was very hard hit by the disaster, and the principal of the school received them with warm thanks. The school had been damaged by the flooding, and our friend also donated a vaulting horse (vaulting box, pommel horse, whatever a Japanse stacking tobibako is called in English) for gymnastics to the school. Although there’s been a lot of headway restoring normalcy in the lives of people in the affected parts of Japan, with roads and services functioning again, it’s still very easy to see how much rebuilding there is to be done.
