As an anime journalist, it is my firm belief that it’s my job to be as impartial as possible and deliver the news to you unfiltered. That being said, Assassination Classroom is my all-time favorite series, so you’ll forgive me if I bend that rule just a bit.
In an announcement posted to both Twitter and Facebook, Toonami revealed that the modern classic series Assassination Classroom is joining their television lineup starting Saturday, August 29th!
The new lineup will be as follows:
12:00 AM: Dragon Ball Super
12:30 AM: JoJo: Golden Wind
1:00 AM: Assassination Classroom
1:30 AM: Black Clover
2:00 AM: Fire Force
2:30 AM: Naruto: Shippuden
3:00 AM: Samurai Jack
Originally a manga created by Yūsei Matsui, the series ran for 21 volumes between July 2012 to March 2016. In January 2015, the first anime adaptation produced by studio Lerche and directed by Seiji Kishi premiered with Funimation simulcasting it in the west. A year later, the second season premiered bringing the final episode count up to 48.
The story for Assassination Classroom takes place on a remote mountain behind a prestigious junior high school. On this remote mountain are the members of class 3-E who have all been rejected by the main campus and are treated as outcasts and pariahs. One day, the moon explodes with 70% being destroyed and a few days later, a strange genetically engineered lifeform appears in their class claiming to be the one who destroyed the moon. He also states that he’ll do the same to the Earth at the end of that school year unless one of the students of class 3-E can assassinate him by graduation.
As stated earlier, this series tops my list of all-time favorites. A heart-warming and hilarious coming of age story (with a fair bit of action just for good measure), this series is one that I push onto everyone that I meet simply because of how superb it is. It absolutely thrills me it’s finally getting a television airing so that so many others can bask in the feels and emotional roller coaster that it presents.
