August 2nd is パンツの日 pantsu no hi or Panties Day, because the numbers 8/2 can be pronounced as pan-tsu according to some numeral-phonetic system that only Japanese people can understand. Since Japan has gone to the trouble of making a special day for us to celebrate anime underwear, we thought we’d rank the best types of anime panties to celebrate on Pantsu Day!
Today there’s a lot of variation in the anime panties, the back in the 90s the standard panty color was pure white. Pretty much all of the panties shown in the classic ecchi anime Agent Aika were white.
This tradition is continued in the Aika R-16: Virgin Mission prequel, which featured extremely well animated pure white panties.
Ever since exploding in popularity after appearing in 2003’s Stellvia of the Universe, blue-and-white-striped panties became a standard feature in anime character design…as if any real girl would own only one type of underwear. Mio Akiyama from K-On! might be the most famous blue-and-white shimapan character, which is funny considering we never get to see her underwear in the anime itself.
Blue shimapan give you a +2 bonus when trying to catch keys tossed to you!
J-List has shimapan in stock in both female and otokonoko sizes. Browse them here!
Shimapan come in many other colors, too, including pink, orange and yellow. Green is nice, don’t you think?
Some characters take the shimapan concept and make a totally new thing with it, which can become quite iconic. I like Asuka’s panties from Senran Kagura.
It’s funny how other base colors can be popular as in the world of anime panties. I find myself becoming a fan of yellow panties.
I’m rather fond of Kou’s red panties from Lesbian Game Developers! New Game!
You can’t go wrong with black, either.
The world of anime panties is wonderful and complex, and there are always new varieties to discover. The episode where Krillin got an eyeful of Buruma’s ichigo pantsu was legendary.
Then there are totally original concepts for anime panties that are great to celebrate on Pantsu Day. Like these plaid panties. I’m totally ready for them to become a thing.
Another fun category are childish panties like these Bear Pantsu from Maken-ki!
String panties that can be removed in seconds can also be tempting.
Sometimes the best way to get into the holiday spirit is with pantsu!
Panties are best when they’ve got frills on them, which are so wonderful to look at.
The queen of frilly panties is Hanekawa from the Monogatari Series.
Sometimes panties are best appreciated while being viewed from close up…
…or even closer-up.
Finally, sometimes the best pantsu are “no-pan” or no panties at all.
