Super Psychic Policeman Chojo might be labeled as a shonen anime, but its brilliance lies in the mass appeal of the comedy its kooky duo delivers.

The Giga Beam of Hard Nerding
I love studying the community dynamics within different geek groups. Every uber-fan has an intense, laser-focused passion for the things they love. Action figures that’ll never touch a sandpit, waifu collectible cards, games you have to read, tiny skateboards you can ride with your fingers, or whatever it is, there’s someone ready to geek out about it.
This intense passion can both exclude and include others. It can be cool, or cringe.

Card gamers, for instance, tend to hyperfocus on optimizing their battle strategies to get the most from their expensive cards. And when they’re in the zone, don’t start choking on a corn dog, because nobody will notice you turning blue.
But put two Pokémon TCG collectors within each other’s orbit. And that hyperfocus can also become a laser beacon, sending them toward each other and friendship at light speed.
Super Psychic Policeman Chojo taps into that geek energy for laughs and relatability, and it leaves us laughing at ourselves.
Psychic Policeman’s Hypnotic Call
Chojo (voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi), the titular psychic cop of Super Psychic Policeman Chojo, uses his giga-beam nerding to get on everyone’s nerves. And it’s brilliantly relatable. Chojo is a yo-yo guy, a TCG player, and a gunpla model-kit collector. Is that his cover for his poor people skills, or is he naturally self-centered?

Officer Ippongi (voiced by Riko Aono), Chojo’s police partner, is naive, optimistic, friendly, and determined. Everything Chojo isn’t. She’s the bubbly, well-rounded foil to Chojo’s geek-fueled egotism. It’s a subtle spin on the buddy-cop comedy template, but a flourish that makes Psychic Policeman perfect for anime.
The duo’s reliable comic setup will keep me coming back. The geeky details will leave me feeling seen.
Poop Jokes, Yu-Gi-Oh! Shots Fired, and Gals
While Psychic Policeman’s jokes are aimed at the shonen crowd (geeky guys who like poop jokes), Ippongi’s presence keeps the humor widely accessible.

On one hand, we have poop jokes, a setup out of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Initial D references, and a gal in need of rescuing. These are mostly for the boys.
But we also have Ippongi’s plight regarding working with the men around her, which many ladies will appreciate. Young Ippongi is capable, and her ideals haven’t yet fallen to life’s trials. Like many young women entering a career, she hopes for supportive, hardworking colleagues. Instead, she gets a cocky man-baby and an odd found family.
Psychic Policeman’s Animation and Character Design
I’m unapologetically a Newgrounds fan, so I love Super Psychic Policeman Chojo’s bold, vibrant, pulsing animation style. Some scenes came at me too fast, but I was happy to rewatch them. Although the animation style seems simple, a lot is going on.

In particular, two details of Ippongi’s character design impressed me.
Ippongi’s eyes are rounded, right-angled isosceles triangles that nearly touch the sides of her head. They’re huge, even by the big-eyes, small-mouth standards of anime. Pon-chan’s eyes sell her naivety and, let’s be honest, make her look thick. But Pon-chan’s no idiot.
And her skirt? The Official Japanese Police Service Uniform Regulations, Section 69.d., clearly state the official skirt length for policewomen, and we’re sure Officer Ippongi is “towing the line.” Although ecchi fans might feel hemmed out of panty shots, I enjoy her fun but functional look. After all, she has truly arresting legs.
Super Psychic Policeman Chojo is Simple Comedy Fare
Super Psychic Policeman Chojo won’t win any awards. But I think it’s a great anime to show off to your normie friends and family, or to relax to after an exhausting day on the beat (no, not that kind of beat). Couples will enjoy another layer to Chojo and Ippongi’s relationship, so give them a watch if you’re sharing a couch.
Super Psychic Policeman Chojo streams on Crunchyroll in Japanese with subtitles.
As for the Megumi rating, have you read my mind? I’m getting a tree… no… free…. Yup, you read my mind; Chojo and Ippongi score a solid three on the Megumi Scale. If I’ve read your mind right, you’ll enjoy the comedy, the geekery, and the back-and-forth between police partners.
Cops and Cross Sales
And, while we’ve got you in for questioning, would you join the force if your badge came with a service robot instead of a pistol? We have the 4K remaster of Patlabor: the Movie, complete with English subtitles. We only have one in stock, so nab it, quick. Or you could grab Police Milk -Saimin Kanojo Side Story-. This doujin has hypnosis and some intriguing ideas for any advertising company looking to revive those old Got Milk ads.
