Crunchyroll Adds City Hunter to Their Catalog

Get ready to take a trip back in time with this new catalog addition to Crunchyroll’s library!

In an announcement posted to their official blog on Thursday, May 7th, Crunchyroll revealed that they have added all 51 episodes of the original City Hunter anime for users in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. City Hunter was first aired in 1987 and was produced by studio Sunrise.

Crunchyroll describes the series as:

Ryo Saeba, the legendary City Hunter, is a first-class sweeper for hire, taking on jobs from protecting beautiful women to taking out bad guys permanently. He can be a private detective or hitman, whatever the case calls for, and it often requires the use of his superhuman marksmanship. But even so, Ryo can’t do it alone. His partner is Kaori Makimura, the younger sister of his murdered best friend. Kaori serves as his assistant, while also protecting their attractive clients from Ryo’s “mokkori” advances with her trusty supply of 100 ton hammers.

Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of City Hunter, you’ve more than likely encountered it in one form or another. Originally a manga series created by Tsukasa Hojo which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1985 to 1991, the series has become a colossal mega-franchise spanning multiple television series and movies from several countries including France, South Korea, and China. The franchise released the most recent movie in February 2019.

In the west, the license for City Hunter has changed hands multiple times. Most recently it was picked up by Discotek Media who announced, in April 2019, that they had licensed the entire animated franchise including the previously mentioned 2019 movie titled Shinjuku Private Eyes. The first set has already been released on home video to popular retailers.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to check out this beloved piece of anime history, now is finally your chance!
