Just like a real cell, the Cells at Work! series has been multiplying at an incredibly rapid rate. The 2015 manga series by Akane Shimuzu has already inspired a huge number of spinoff series, like Bacteria at Work, Cells That Don’t Work, Cells at Work! Code Black, Platelets at Work, Cells at Work! Baby, and Cells at Work! Lady. Now, the smash hit 2018 anime adaptation of the manga is starting to expand just as much. We’ve already heard the news that a theatrical film sequel will be hitting theaters in Japan this year, and that an entire 2nd season will follow it in 2021. According to the latest magazine cover of Kodansha’s Morning magazine, fans can also expect to see one of the biggest manga spinoffs of the series get animated in 2021 as well.
According to a scan of the latest issue of Kodansha’s Morning magazine cover, a 2021 anime will be adapting Cells at Work! Code Black, the incredibly dark and gritty spinoff of the main series. Details are currently scarce concerning the animated version of Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya’s manga, as the full magazine won’t be released until Thursday. Mainly, it isn’t clear if this is an additional anime releasing alongside the 2nd season of the main series, or if the previously advertised 2021 release of season 2 will contain story content from Cells at Work! Code Black.
The upcoming film, as well as the second season airing in 2021, are both produced at David Productions, the anime studio responsible for the incredibly popular ongoing Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure anime. Hirofumi Ogura, who previously directed Black Butler II and Null & Peta, is set to be the new director of the second season and the theatrical anime. Yuuko Kakihara is once again writing and overseeing scripts for the series, while Takahiko Yoshida is returning as character designer and Kenichiro Suehiro is once again composing the music. The voice acting cast from the first season will also be reprising their roles in season two of Cells at Work!
