Well, the monster anime season of winter 2021 is finally behind us, a season that saw double the number of high-quality series than normal, partially due to COVID-19 forcing anime broadcast schedules to get pushed back. How many series did you follow this season? I followed an incredible 19 shows in their entirety, which has to be a record for me. Now a new anime season is upon us, and it’s time for our usual “what will J-List be watching?” blog post!
What Anime Will J-List be Following in The New Anime Season?
While it won’t quite be as crowded a season as winter 2021 was, there are plenty of potential winners in the new anime season. A quick check of MAL shows *51* new series, and a high number of continuing shows… though it’s not exactly fair to count neverending series like One Piece or Borato or Sazae-san as being part of the anime cour system.
So in no particular order, here are 14 anime series J-List will be keeping an eye on in the new anime season!
Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san
One show fans have been anticipated for a long time is Please don’t Bully me, Miss Nagatoro, thanks to the constant sharing of “smug anime girl” memes across the Internet for years. How popular the show becomes probably depends on how offended certain users of Twitter get — all without bothering to watch a single episode, naturally — and how many fans the inevitable “controversy” brings in.
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω
The isekai harem anime which kept me well supplied with sexy fanservice gifs to post to the J-List Twitter is back for a new season! I guess we’re supposed to pronounce Ω as “omega”?
Fruits Basket: The Final
What’s the best anime remake ever? You could make a very convincing argument that it’s been the reboot of Fruits Basket, the tale of a poor orphan girl who finds herself living with a family cursed to turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when touched by a person of the opposite sex. I am so jazzed for the final season!
SSSS.Dynazenon
Being a fan of tokusatsu shows in general and Ultraman in particular, I’ve really been enjoying Trigger’s the smart melding of Tsuburaya Productions’s mecha/tokusatsu works with anime in the form of SSSS.Gridman. Let’s hope they remember to include the sexy thighs with this new series.
Godzilla Singular Point
Considering that I trace my origin as an anime blogger to the Japanese release of the awful 1997 Godzilla when I realized that being a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world might be a more important part of J-List’s mission than just selling bento boxes and naughty products, I’ll naturally be watching this show. I hope it can avoid the curse of “Netflix original” anime being… how can I put this… not very good?
Higehiro: I Shaved. Then I Brought a High School Girl Home
When office worker Yoshida confesses his feeling to his co-worker, he gets shot down and feels dejected. He stumbles home drunk, surprised to find a high school girl sitting by the side of the road. The girl — a runaway from Hokkaido — offers herself to Yoshida in exchange for a place to stay for the night. But Yoshida has other ideas…
Osamake: The Romcom Where The Childhood Friend Won’t Lose!
Zombie Land Saga: Revenge
A second season of the popular zombie idol anime! I wonder if we’ll get another Zombie rap battle?
Shadows House
Fumetsu no Anata e
Another new anime that might surprise me is, To Your Eternity is about an immortal being of some sort, who sets off on a long journey.
Tokyo Revengers
Based on a manga called Tokyo 卍 Revengers, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that the 卍 character — called manji ni Japanese, a symbol that’s been associated with Buddhist temples for thousands of years — won’t be in the English version. This seems to be a gang story, but with a time travel element, which naturally puts it on my radar.
So I’m a Spider, So What?
A girl gets sent to an isekai universe as a spider and must meticulously learn how to “level up,” all while…something is going on with her human friends. I didn’t pay much attention to that part of the story, as the scenes with Kumoko are so enjoyable, mostly thanks to Madoka voice actress Aoi Yuuki’s outstanding performance. I’ll certainly be tuning in for the continuation!
Cestvs: The Roman Fighter
I continue to be impressed by the range of interesting stories anime is capable of showing us. Here’s a dramatic historical series set in Rome called Cestvs: The Roman Fighter. Considering how good Viking-themed Vinland Saga was, this show might be amazing.
I Became a Kuro-Gal So I Fucked My Best Friend
Finally, I expected this quasi-hentai about a tanned guy who gets transformed into a kuro-gal to get more attention than it did. Now that he’s a girl, naturally, his best friend wants to fuck him, because of anime! I didn’t have time to write about the show last season, but I’ll make time soon!
That’s our list of the upcoming shows from the new anime season we plan on writing about here on J-List. Did we miss any other important series? Post them below, or tell us on Twitter!
