Happy New Year to everyone in the world. 2022 was a year of challenges and troubles for a lot of people around the world, and we hope that 2023 proves a much better year for all of us! In today’s post let’s look at the new anime season, and learn which anime series J-List will be paying attention to this season!
What New Anime will J-List Be Watching?
After the busy anime season we just got finished with, what new anime do we have to look forward to? While the winter 2023 anime season doesn’t have many huge headline shows, it does make up for that comparative lack of quality with quantity, giving us 50+ new series to watch, not counting continuing series. Let’s dig in!
First, the official Nier:Automata anime seems like it will get a lot of attention this year, thanks to the popularity of the game. The game gave us some amazing figures and doujinshi to sell on J-List, so let’s hope this trend continues!
Every fan loves to watch new anime seasons, at least going by how loudly they whine if their favorite show doesn’t get one. This season we’ve got new seasons of Vinland Saga, Bungou Stray Dogs, Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? and even The Vampire Dies in No Time. Did we really need more of that last one? This is making me worried that we’re in anime bubble 2.0.
One show I’ll definitely be tuning in for is the “2nd attack” of Ijiranaide Nagatoro-san. Will we see more progression in the blossoming love between Senpai and the tanned devil Nagatoro, with her planning new ways to tease him, which always backfire and generate sexy fanservice for us?
One of the bright spots in the slice-of-life genre recently has been BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, and I’m happy to see a new season is coming. This show is proof that you never know what concepts will resonate with fans, so it’s important to keep an open mind going into a new anime season.
One show that’s entering “social phenomenon” levels of popularity here in Japan is Tokyo Revengers. It’s the story of Takamichi, who must travel back in time to his days as a gang member so he can find a way to save his girlfriend Hinata from being murdered. The anime regularly does crossover events with famous clothing brands and department stores in Tokyo.
A new anime for Trigun is coming. While rebooting classic IP can sometimes lead to glorious results, like Fruits Basket, more than often they fail to capture the magic of the original, and just fade out after one season.
We’ve got various isekai-esque titles to sample this season, too many to differentiate at this point. Three are Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World, Tenten Kakumei: The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, and The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte. Which one will generate memes and get fans excited? I don’t know yet!
Then there’s Tomo-chan is a Girl!, a show about a boy named Jun and his tomboy childhood friend Tomo. She’s in love with him, but he only sees her as a friend. Can Tomo-chan find a way to escape the bro-zone?
Spy Classroom. I guess the popularity of Spy x Family guarantees that the “spy anime genre” will be a thing for a few years. I really like the character designs for this show, so let’s hope it’s good.
Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai. Then there’s the odd trend of “anime that have the word ‘mob’ in the title” which I can’t explain. This show is about a boy named Shiraishi who is kage ga usui, that is, he’s got so little presence people don’t notice him even if they’re in the same room as him. But his classmate Kubo-san is going to complicate his life! She’s voiced by Hana Kazawa, so that will be enough to make more than a few fans watch!
Revenger is a new anime animated by film studio Shochiku and written by legendary anime writer Gen Urobuchi, creator of Saya no Uta and Madoka Magica. Let’s hope it’s a success!
Onimai: I’m Now Your Sister! Based on a manga by Ichinsha, this is the story of Mahiro, an otaku who loves eroge. His sister is a scientist who turns Mahiro into a girl so she can study his body for science. This certainly sounds up my alley!
My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog. A boy gets reincarnated as a dog, and gets picked up by Inukai-san, who happens to be the girl he’s in love with. Now that he’s a dog, he gets lots of low-angles sexy views of his crush, which sounds like a win to me! This will probably be one of those censored-for-broadcast, uncensored-for-Blu-ray releases.
Thanks for reading this overview of the new anime J-List will be watching in the winter 2023 anime season. What shows are you excited about? Post them in the comments, or talk with us on Twitter!
It’s been an amazing year for J-List’s sister company J18 Publishing, which has brought out so many amazing uncensored hentai doujinshi and manga that we need to find a new, larger warehouse in 2023! The latest work is My Little Sister is a Shut-in, by Ichihaya! Link is here.
