One reason we enjoy anime is that it just “gets” us, offering us the kinds of stories we want to watch, deep down in our hearts. There’s no putting on airs or pretending to be high art, as if we weren’t all human, with basic human desires. Let’s take a look at the new season of How Not To Summon a Demon Lord (IsekaiMaou), and why sometimes we just want to turn off our brains and enjoy some great anime fanservice after a long day.
Some Anime Stories are Elemental
All entertainment represents a form of escapism, but there are some anime series that have become elemental building blocks of the industry. These include:
- Sci-fi adventures where a generic hero must “get in the robot” and save the day, which viewers can self-insert themselves into mentally.
- Stories where guys can travel to isekai worlds and become brave heroes.
- “Reverse harems” where females find themselves surrounded by a circle of ridiculously handsome guys who fight among themselves to win her romantically.
- Idol anime in which different girls try their best to become idols, while we root for them.
- Romance stories in which we can obsess over a boy and a girl falling in love (Horimiya, Tonikawa)… or two girls (Bloom Into You) if that’s what we want to see.
Is How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω the Perfect Fanservice Anime?
Some anime series are so complex, I feel like I need to spend a few months reading up on them in order to enjoy the stories properly, like the very complex Fate series, with 14 various series and movies. It can even be hard to know where to start with an anime, such as the Monogatari series, which has *22* different series and movies, depending on how you count them. That isn’t the case with Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (which translates as The Dark Lord in Another World and Girls with Slave-Summoning Magic), which offers exactly what fans want (anime fanservice), exactly when we want it (right now!).
Diablo is a human hikikomori named Takuma who gets summoned inside his favorite fantasy game Cross Reverie and ends up with two servants, the busty and bubbly elf Shera L. Greenwood and the flat-chested tsundere catgirl Rem Galleu. He goes on adventures with both girls, usually saving some new female character from danger in the process, which involves some “lucky sukebe” sexy fanservice event for him, and the eventual adding of the new girl to his harem.

Blatant Anime Fanservice… or Honest Anime Fanservice?
Although MAL — the closest thing to Rotten Tomatoes for the anime community — has IsekaiMaou ranked as one of the of the worst isekai anime series, I like it a lot because of the way it’s so honest with fans. The creators know what we want to see: enjoyable scenes in which Diablo takes on some mini-quest which results in visually pleasing ecchi anime fanservice for us, and zero stress. No, you can just turn off your brain and enjoy each episode, secure in the knowledge that…something, something, something, elf boobs, Diablo being surprised by elf boobs, followed by some counter-move by the flat-chested catgirl. Diablo’s in his isekai, all’s right with the world.
