Funny Anime Subtitles Are Entertaining!
Fans who watch subtitled anime these days are probably used to most of it coming from official sources like Crunchyroll. But back in the day, there was a complex ecosystem of fan translators who would translate an anime on their laptops and then upload it to torrent sites like Horrible Subs. Sometimes, the subtitles were of questionable quality or full of errors, but at least they had the potential to make us smile with funny anime subtitles like the ones in this post. Let’s take a look at some of the most hilarious examples!
The best thing an anime translator can do is ensure his subtitles don’t get in the way of what the viewer wants to see!
Yes, there’s nothing worse than getting an especially choice camera angle only to have our view blocked by the subtitles. Happily, this translator was kind enough to move the subtitles for us.
Another classic example of funny anime subtitles that add to our enjoyment of the anime overall is this scene from How Not To Summon a Demon Lord. Subtitles 100!
It’s great when the anime subtitler does us all a solid and moves his subtitles out of the way so we can see what’s really important to the story.
Another great example. Thanks, Translator-san!
For an extremely dark horror anime, Higurashi When They Cry had some sexy moments.
Anime translators can play with the subtitles in more ways than one. This funny moment from Ore, Twintail Ni Narimasu was super creative!
Back in the fan subbing days, translators sometimes went crazy explaining linguistic concepts to fans. This allowed us to gain a deeper appreciation for Japan and its language while we enjoyed the anime we loved.
More Subtitles That Had Us in Stitches
Sometimes subtitles break the fourth wall, allowing the characters to speak to us directly. Now we can’t stop thinking about strawberry panties!
Other times anime translators would judge our taste in anime through the subtitles.
Sometimes anime subtitles are used to shout out to classic memes from bygone days. All according to keikaku.
Of course, Japanese is a difficult language, and sometimes the translators weren’t up to the task assigned to them.
We can finally understand what animals are saying through the magic of funny anime subtitles!
We love it when anime translators have fun with the source material, bringing some of that enjoyment into the English subtitles.
Here’s another example of funny English subtitles doing their best to become part of the story we’re watching.
