It’s fun to follow the various tropes that are baked into the anime storytelling universe. The generic anime male “everyman.” The blonde girl is always the rich daughter of a powerful family. Parents live abroad, allowing the main character (and his younger sister, usually) to live at home without adult supervision. The first opponent the main character fights will always become his steadfast ally from the third episode. Harems. Reverse harems. School club needs more members to keep from being closed. Then there’s the fun trope of “perverted anime girl” who are, interestingly, a lot more common in the anime world than perverted boys.
Some major types of perverted anime girl include…
- The basic perverted girl, who likes naughty stuff and is honest about it. For some reason they often like science, too.
- Perverted virgin. Is hyper-interested in sex, but when push comes to shove, she becomes comically shy and/or violent even though she wants to move forward. Yamada’s First Time and My Girlfriend is a Virgin Bitch are good examples.
- Aggressive perverted girl (straight), who goes after the (usually dim-witted) male main character, usually for comic relief purposes. Anna-senpai is a good example.
- Aggressive perverted girl (yuri), who pursues either main or side female characters, usually while spouting a nosebleed. Yukinoji from Inu x Boku SS is my pick for this category, but there are many others.
- Fujoshi. Can’t stop fantasizing about every male pairing.
- Clumsy/accidental girl. “Oh no! He’ll think I’m a perverted girl who sits on the faces of sleeping boys!”
- Possessive/yandere perverted anime girl. Wants the main character so much, she’ll do harm to other girls.
- Muttsuri sukebe. A girl who pretends to have no interest in sex, but is actually full of curiosity. Like Yui from To Love-ru or Takagi-san.
Another interesting question is, why have Westerners embraced anime, with all its sexy visual elements, as much as we have? Interestingly, it’s not so different from the way I grew up worshipping Britain’s Monty Python in the 80s, and Benny Hill in the late 70s. Both provided a breath of fresh cultural air, and (in the case of the latter), actual nudity on TV, which were greatly appreciated growing up in California. The human brain is wired to prefer things that are fresh and unique, and I believe this is a big reason those of us who feel our home countries are repressed sexually embraced anime as we did.
