The History of Anime Snacks

Peter Payne by Peter Payne

in Your Friend in Japan

We like to think of our little company as a “wonderful toy box of things from Japan” where various products will pop up randomly, from traditional Lucky Cat statues to legendary cosplay products to your favorite anime figures. Another thing we enjoy is finding Japanese snacks or drinks featured in anime and selling them on the site. There’s a long history of tying food products to anime series, going back to the Sakuma Drops from Grave of the Fireflies, the Yebisu beer Misato drinks in Evangelion and the Pocky and Pretz seen in Please Teacher! and Please Twins! The idea grew into full meme-hood soon after, and these days everything from Taiyaki fish-shaped cakes and takoyaki Osaka-style octopus-filled batter balls to star-shaped Kompeito candy and Dr. Pepper have become famous fixtures in anime. As the industry has evolved in a world where they can no longer sell $600 boxed sets of laser discs to fans, companies have turned to licensing their characters in new ways, and now you can buy everything from official Totoro milk caramels and Pokemon candies to otaku-friendly pizza from Domino’s (“Have fun with Miku!!”).

“It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this!”
