Each anime season has certain features that come to define it in the minds of fans. For example, some seasons are overloaded with a higher-than-average number of idol shows, or isekai series, or, um, scenes where a girl needs the main character to insert a suppository in her booty hole. In addition to being the anime season where all our favorite shows got continuations or reboots — Bleach, Yama no Susume, Di Gi Charat, and even Urusei Yatsura — the current anime season also has a ton of ecchi fan service. One show you might enjoy is Renai Flops, aka Love Flops, which we’ll look at in this post!
Renai Flops is the Harem Anime of the Season
Asahi Kashiwagi is your average MC-kun, waking up and preparing for a normal day…until a fortune teller on a morning news show tells him he’s going to have some exciting encounters today. He heads off to school, wondering if the fortune teller’s predictions will come true.
He immediately crashes into cute meganekko, then encounters a strange busty lady on the train, then gets smashed in the face with some fluffy white pantsu, then meets a tsundere in the park who’s had her bra stolen by a malfunctioning robot, and finally encounters a “boy” having a problem with some cute dogs.
He arrives at school to find that — surprise! — he has four new transfer students in his class, and the strange woman he met on the train is his new teacher!
He makes up with his new classmates and continues going about his day. Then he notices a letter in his locker. It seems that someone is about to confess love to him!
Should You Watch Renai Flops? Sure!
If you’re a fan of the harem genre and like a little sexy fan service at the end of the day, I think Renai Flops is worth your time. Let’s go over four reasons why!
It’s an Original Anime
Anime is generally based on novels or manga which are often still ongoing. This leads to tension between anime viewers who want a proper story with a resolution, and the creator, who may want to use the anime as an advertisement to get more readers of their manga or novels. Happily, Renai Flops is an original work that might get a satisfying ending. (There is a manga for the show, but it was made from the scripts for the anime, which came first.)
The Production Values are Ridiculously High
The gorgeous animation is being done by Passione, the studio that brought us Mierko-chan, Hinako Note, Isekai Meikyuu Harem and Ishuzoku Reviewers, so they’ve got exactly the right pedigree to pull off a show like this.
The Waifus are Top-Quality
I’m loving all the girls so far, with the Chinese teacher Mongfa-sensei being my top pick. The voice actors are top quality too, with Rie Takahashi, Ayana Taketatsu and Miku Ito all in major roles.
The Fan Service is (Mostly) Clever and Fun
As you know, one of the reasons I love anime is that it has the freedom to explore shimoneta, or below-the-belt humor, which is usually a welcome break from the sexually repressed world most of us live in.
And who can say no to an actual “banana in your pocket” joke?
Renai Flops is an Anime About the Future!
One reason I love animation is anything that can be imagined can be depicted. This became apparent to me as a boy watching Star Trek: The Animated Series, which was able to get a lot more creative with the aliens than the 1960s original series could. The same applies to creators trying to show us a vision of future technology that doesn’t exist yet.
In the Shinjuku of the future, we get:
- AI that tell you what train to ride.
- AR glasses that project information the wearer can read.
- Cell phones with screens that float in mid-air.
- Snarky home robots that wake you up and insult you.
- Cleaning robots pick up trash from parks… and remove girls’ underwear.
- Also, banana toasters, because why not? This is the future!
