Questions About Anime

Peter Payne by Peter Payne

There are many mysterious things about anime that might puzzle viewers from time to time. Why do characters sneeze randomly when others are talking about them? When a character slips and falls, why is there always a pair of soft boobs for them to “accidentally” land on…or depending on the level of fanservice in the show, shimapan? Why does the roof of the school seem to be reserved for main characters to have dramatic scenes of dialogue, with never any other people around? (Actually, many schools permanently close the roof area because Japan has such a terrible problem with suicide.) How are the large, expressive eyes of female characters always visible from underneath their hair or through the frames of their glasses? What’s up with those school swimsuits? Another question is, why do main characters in anime always sit in the same part of the classroom, at the back of the room near the window. It’s funny, and after more than 30 years of watching various anime series, I can say that a good number of the main characters I’ve seen tend to sit in that exact spot. I’ve even caught myself doing it while at the gym, subconsciously picking that part of the room to stay in while in my aerobics class. It just feels like the correct place to be, for some reason.

Got any other weird things you’ve wondered about in anime?
