With the explosion in the number of anime series released each season, it’s impossible for any fan to keep up with even half the shows we might be interested in. Here’s a blog post exploring nine currently-airing anime series that very few fans are watching.

What Anime Series Have You Missed?
Some anime are great, but might have flown under your radar. Other series are failing to generate buzz with fans for good reason. Let’s try to separate the wheat from the chaff in this blog post!
Henjin no Salad Bowl
First up is A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, a “reverse isekai” about a girl with magical abilities who teleports to our world. Here she meets Sousuke, and forms a detective agency with him, using his skill and her magic. The episodes (and anime references) were all enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the character designs by the great Kantoku, who has really been on a roll lately!
Peter’s Rating: I recommend Henjin no Salad Bowl to anyone who loved Cop Craft.
Another Anime You’re Not Watching: Highspeed Etoile
A racing anime in which cute girls race in F1-esque cars using futuristic technology. Unfortunately, the high point of the series seems to be the above image of one of the character’s butts, thanks to the needless CGI animation and wooden characters.
Peter’s Rating: If you need racing anime with cute butts, just watch MF Ghost.
Astro Note, a.k.a. Urusei Maison Ikkoku (giggle)
What if Kyoko from my beloved Maison Ikkoku was really an alien? That’s the premise behind Astro Note. It’s about the love story of a young chef who moves into an old boarding house because he’s fallen in love with the manager, Mira. But Mira is an alien, with a talking poodle!
Peter’s Rating: Who should watch Astro Note? Anyone who will get the Maison Ikkoku jokes, and anyone who wants a chance to recapture the magic of Onegai☆Teacher. I’m totally loving every episode!
Another Forgotten Anime: Urusei Yatsura
Speaking of Urusei Yatsura, it’s sad that the rebooted series isn’t generating much buzz. I guess that’s to be expected: fans raised on ’90s and 2000s anime don’t have the same connection to Lum and her friends that we older fans did.
Re:Monster, a.k.a. That Time I Built An Orc Harem
If you think anime needs more orcs, then maybe you should be watching Re:Monster. It’s an anime about a man who gets reincarnated as a weak goblin named Goburou. While some fans may roll their eyes at yet another generic isekai/tensei anime story, at least the show seems to have made a few bold choices with its story.
Peter’s Rating: Hard to call either way. Maybe give a few episodes a try?
Vampire Dormitory, The Femboy BL Anime That…What?
Soft on Demand is the bold JAV studio that invented the “Indies” genre, and they’ve always made extremely fresh and interesting ero titles for their fans. One was too bold for its own good: a JAV about two boys having sex, but both of the performers were girls dressed up as boys. The title sold poorly because pretty much everyone was confused about what was going on.
I get similar vibes from Vampire Dormitory. It’s an anime about a cute femboy who gets adopted to work at a dormitory populated by gorgeous male vampires. It seems like it’s going to be a BL story, until we learn that the main character is secretly a girl.
Peter’s Rating: If you like pretty boy vampires, go for it!
I Forgot to Watch Idolmaster Shiny Colors
As I’ve written before, there’s a strong tendency for fans to bang their fists on the table demanding new seasons of anime they love…then refuse to watch them when they arrive. While Idolmaster Million Live got me to watch because it featured the OG Idolmaster girls, I couldn’t get past the CGI animation for the new season of Shiny Colors.
Peter’s Rating: If there’s a reason for CGI animation, like the glorious Beastars, I can get on board. But trying to re-create “moe” with CGI is a non-starter for me.
Knights of the Zodiac
Without any fanfare at all, the Netflix-funded 100% CGI Saint Seiya “anime” has been continuing. Netflix must be overjoyed at discovering a way to create animation that’s even cheaper than a proper hand-drawn anime series, which is already ridiculously cheap compared with their live-action offerings. It’s a shame this abomination exists, because it keeps any interest in properly revisiting the Saint Seiya universe from ever growing.
Peter’s Rating: What do you think?
Where’s The 9th Anime?
The ninth entry in my list of anime you’re not watching is THE NEW GATE. I was going to write something about it, but the show felt so generic that it put me to sleep as I was writing. If there’s anything to recommend about this anime, please tell us in the comments!
