I recently wrote that the reason I generally don’t watch super-long Shounen anime like One Piece is because I love the amazing variety that seasonal anime offers, with something fresh and enjoyable to watch with each season. A good example of this is Hyakkano, aka 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You, a ridiculously fun harem anime about a guy who ends up with 100 girls who love him. Let’s see if it’s for you!
What’s the Story of 100 Girlfriends?
Rentarou is unlucky in love: he’s managed to confess his love to 100 different girls, but got shot down every time. He visits a shrine famous for matchmaking to pray, and is told he’ll meet 100 “soulmates” who will want to be his girlfriend. The only downside? Girls who fall in love with him but can’t become his official girlfriend are doomed to die. Oh no!
Right off the bat, two girls confess to Rentarou: the busty and pure Hakari Hanazono and the tsundere Karane Inda. The energy with which both girls pursue him is hilarious, and I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud this much since I watched Yamada’s First Time.
Hyakkano is based on a manga running in Young Jump. Biburi Animation Studios produces the anime, and they also brought us Quintessential Quintuplets and Azur Lane.
Hyakkano isn’t a harem anime, it’s a parody of a harem anime, and as such every gag is self-aware and over-the-top. The setup is a little odd — why are all the existing girls okay with Rentarou adding more girlfriends to his harem? — but somehow it all works out in the end.
The Girls are Great
The most important thing for a good harem anime is an evocative collection of waifus, and so far they’re very enjoyable. In addition to the first two, there’s Shizuka, a rich girl who’s so shy she can only communicate by pointing to lines in books, an obsessively efficient girl named Nano, and a “science girl” who made a potion that turned her body into that of a child. Which one will become your favorite?
Of course, if you really like these girls, you might want to read the Hyakkano manga, which is up to 26 girlfriends so far…
