One thing about the Japanese: they love to designate random commemorative days and obsess about them online. Some of these special days are tied to history — for example, November 25 is OL Day, to mark the day the term was chosen by readers of women’s magazine Josei Jishin to serve as the new word for professional female office staff. Some are tied to tied to a visual joke, like the way November 11 is Pocky Day because 11/11 looks like four Pocky sticks, or how October 1 commemorates Glasses Day because the date in kanji (一〇〇一) looks like a pair of glasses. Most of these special days, however, are based on phonetic puns. November 1 is “Dog Day” because “one one one” sounds like wan wan wan, the sound of a dog barking. August 2 is “Pantsu Day” because the number 8 can be pronounced as pan and the English number two sounds like tsu. Or today, which is #いいニーハイの日 ii nii-hai no hi or Good Knee Socks Day, a day to celebrate sexy over-knee socks and sexy Absolute Zone legs!
There’s a worldwide fascination with the “sweet three centimeters” (to take the first three words of the Lucky Star opening) of leg visible between the top of a girl’s over-knee socks. The word got its start with the A.T. Field (“Absolute Terror Field”) from Evangelion, described in the show as “a holy area no one can intrude upon.” In 2001, the term (minus its middle word) was used in a blog post to describe the perfection of a desktop mascot character called Ghost, who sported cute knee high socks with a skirt. By 2005, the term had caught on in a big way, and “zettai ryouiki only” doujinshi events were held, with artists creating works featuring the leg fashion.
