Where did the Dark-Skinned GAL Boom Come From?
The phenomenon of GALs (written ギャル gyaru in Japanese) started in the mid-1990s when a singer from Okinawa named Namie Amuro took over the JPOP world. Suddenly every teenage girl wanted to dress in the flamboyant way the tanned singer dressed, including going to tanning salons and showing lots of skin. The boom grew into a fashion subculture called kogyaru (kogal) which got shortened to just gal.
