WIT STUDIO plans to test the waters in 2022 with yet another original series titled Onipan.
I’m going to be totally honest; even after reading the plot synopsis and watching the promotional video, I’m not 100% certain that I know what this series is supposed to be about. Because of this, I’m just going to present the facts as plainly as possible and let you decide for yourselves what you want to think of this one.
In this original series, the lead characters are three oni who have turned into humans and, through the power of onipan (a cross between oni and pantsu), will work hard to rehabilitate the image of oni throughout the human world via entering a local high school, helping with activities, and apparently also becoming idols at some point because really, if your female characters aren’t some form of an idol by the end of the show, did you even really try?
In terms of the people who will bring this series to life, in the starring roles we have Yume Nozaki as Tsutsuji, Mika Negishi as Himawari, and finally Kokona Nonaka as Tsuyukusa.
As for the production crew, Masahiko Ota will serve as the director at WIT STUDIO with Junichiro Hashiguchi as assistant director. They’ll be working off series composition by Takashi Aoshima, who is basing the story on the original story created by Ancient Magus’ Bride director Norihiro Naganuma. Ryuta Yanagi will adapt the character designs for the anime.
Those are all the facts on this series as we know them so far. The promotional video indicated that this series will premiere later this year. What worries me about this series isn’t that it’s a pantsu series, but WIT STUDIO seems to be spread rather thin this year. Between Bubble, Spy x Family (which admittedly is a co-production with Cloverworks), and other projects that they’ve already announced for this year, I worry that something is going to break at some point.
