When I saw the first trailer for Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero (Lv1魔王とワンルーム勇者, Lv1 Maou to One Room Yuusha), I thought, “That’s a fat baby demon lord.” But it had the voice actor for Uzaki-chan and Jahy-sama, so I filed the anime title away for a closer look. I’m glad I did! The second time I saw the preview, when I had more time, I saw a demon wearing glasses and a school swimsuit for her uniform. What strangeness is this? Then a beautiful girl in a barely fitting sailor school uniform transformed back into that fat baby demon girl! Level 1 Demon Lord has the same shtick as The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!! Sold. Let’s look at the second trailer.
The Odd Couple slice-of-life vibes look like what happens when you mash Jahy-sama, Uzaki-chan, and Yushibu (I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job.) together. But an anime comedy can’t rely on poor schmuck gags all day. Level 1 Demon Lord sprinkles sexy spice throughout. There’s even something for fans of bulging masculine muscles!
So, who are these girls distracting Max (Yuuichi Nakamura — Hawks from My Hero Academia), the social pariah Hero, from wasting his days in a rundown apartment after a series of celebrity scandals? You have a mix of demons, a ghost, and a girl boss. No, seriously. Her name is Boss.
Level 1 Demon Lord Maou
The former demon lord, defeated by Max the Hero, rises again after ten years as a Level 1 baby demon. At least she still has her third eye! Voiced by Naomi Oozora (Uzaki-chan and Jahy-sama), the demon lord has started living in Max’s disheveled room after tracking him down for revenge. When Maou goes shopping, she transforms into a tall beauty wearing the same size sailor uniform! Underboob for the win!
Zenia
I’m waiting to watch the Level 1 Demon Lord to hear Zenia explain why she wears a school swimsuit. I’m sure it’s perfectly logical! Youko Hikasa, the voice of Zenia, is a busy lady this summer. She’ll also be supplying her talent for Arshes Nei in Bastard!!, Emilia Justina in The Devil is a Part-Timer!!, and Dulles in The Duke of Death and His Maid Season 2. What are some fun things to know about Zenia? She’s a violent drunk, uses brass knuckles, and is a messy eater.
Yuria
She’s a ghost haunting Max’s messy apartment. You can see her hiding from Zenia and Maou in the closet in the Level 1 Demon Lord poster. Will voice actor Ami Koshimizu (Amane from BIRDIE WING and Kilmaria from My One-Hit Kill Sister) do anything besides complain in an ethereal tone? I want to find out!
Boss
That’s her name! She’s an officer in Chief Leo’s breakaway nation. Leo and Fred (a monk specializing in support magic) were Max’s companions when they defeated Maou ten years ago. Fred has remained loyal to the ruling kingdom. Their conflict will draw Max from his obscurity of loserdom because Boss will try to recruit Max. How? Ways. Ways which include those razor-sharp abs! Her voice actress has not been announced yet.
Hidive will stream Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero for North American audiences starting July 3rd.
Level 1 Demon Lord looks at what happens after society no longer needs a hero. What about the other side?
