It took a couple of years to happen but we’re finally getting a second season of the Viking drama, Vinland Saga.
In an announcement that hit Twitter and various Japanese blogs early on Wednesday, July 7th, the staff behind Vinland Saga revealed the series would return for a second season. While they didn’t announce a time frame for release, we know that director Shūhei Yabuta will return to that role alongside character designer Takahiko Abiru. We can also report that the new season will be a television series.
Don’t be sad though because while we got little information about the cast or crew, the official Twitter account posted this nearly two-minute-long promotional video to whet your appetites!
Based on the manga created by Makoto Yukimura, the series first began its serialization in April 2005 in Weekly Shonen Magazine before it moved to Monthly Afternoon magazine where it has been running ever since. The series will release its 25th volume in Japan in late July 2021. Volumes 23 and 24 will be released in English in October 2021.
The first anime adaptation aired in 2019 and ran for 24 episodes. Animated by Wit Studio, the series had the previously mentioned Shūhei Yabuta as the director. Amazon licensed it in English (where it withered on the vine and was sadly mostly ignored by fans in the west) until Sentai Filmworks announced their license of the series which will include a dubbed home video release later this summer.
Vinland Saga is a series that I need to watch. I am very excited about the home video release that will hit store shelves in my region soon. I haven’t skipped this series up to this point because I think the series will be bad, that’s simply not true. My hiccup with this series is that they did not dub it into English, to begin with. Whenever an anime is based in Europe (or anywhere outside of Japan for that matter), it feels strange to me to listen to them speak in Japanese. It’s one of the few occasions when I have to have an English dub to enjoy a series. Yes, I’m very weird like that.
