The second season of Tiger and Bunny is coming our way in April 2022. April 8th, to be exact. On Netflix, to be even more exact than that. To mark this newly announced premiere date, a brand new promotional video has been posted to YouTube which also previews “kaleido proud fiesta” by UNISON SQUARE GARDEN, which is the new opening theme song for the upcoming sequel.
As previously reported, this is going to be a Netflix joint running for 25 episodes with a mostly new crew working with a mostly returning cast of voice actors. Taking over as animation producers will be Bandai Namco Pictures with Atsuko Kase sitting in the director’s chair. The good news is that the original series writer and character designer are returning to their previous roles.
More good news is that the series looks pretty shiny based solely on the few seconds that I saw in the above promotional video. The characters have crisp designs and with the story taking place two years after the 2014 movie, it will be interesting to see where the story goes in what can charitably be called a nostalgia project (or less charitably, an anniversary cash grab).
I know that I’ve been harsh on this particular project in earlier articles, but in my defense, I do it out of love for the franchise. In 2011, Tiger and Bunny absolutely blew me away and I still recall watching it weekly all the way until the closing twists which were so expertly executed that they could’ve performed for Cirque du Soleil.
Tiger and Bunny is one highlight of an already packed year and I feel strongly that if they’re going to bring it back, they had better do it correctly or else they risk the danger of ruining what is already a vaguely tarnished reputation thanks to the sequel movies which did very little for the overall product after the television series wrapped up things nicely.
