The Rising of the Shield Hero Slated for January 2019

The upcoming anime The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) will premier in January 2019! Kadokawa will be producing the series along with Studio Kinema Citrus. The light novel is written by Yusagi Aneko and illustrated by Seira Minami.

The series originally began as a web novel on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website with four hundred and nine web chapters. It began publishing under Kadokawa’s Media Factory MF books imprint in 2012. The series so far has 18 volumes printed as of August. The manga adaptation is drawn by Kyu Aiya has been serialized in Kadokawa’s Month Comic Flapper magazine since February 2014. Both the light novel and manga are English translated by One Peace Books. The trailer first premiered at Anime Expo 2018, along with the first episode at Crunchyroll Expo 2018.

  • Director: Takao Abo (Norn9)
  • Series Composition: Keigo Koyanagi (Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars)
  • Character Design: Masahiro Suwa (Chaika the Coffin Princess animation director)
  • Music Production: Hiromitsu Iijima (IRMA LA DOUCE), Shunichi Uemura (Nippon Columbia)
  • Studio: Kinema Citrus (Made in the Abyss, Barakamonm, .hack//Quantum)
The character designs for the main cast have been revealed and consists of:
  • Kaito Ishikawa (Tenya Iida from My Hero Academia) as Naofumi Iwatani, the Shield Hero

  • Asami Seto (Chihaya Ayase from Chihayafuru) as Raphtalia, a demi-human

The Rising of the Shield Hero Synopsis:

Naofumi Iwatani, an uncharismatic otaku who was summoned into a parallel world along with 3 other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each hero is given their own respectively legendary equipment when summoned, but for Naofumi receiving the Legendary Shield as his weapon and with his lack of charisma and experience he is labeled as the weakest and ended up being betrayed, falsely accused, and robbed by everyone. Penniless, alone and with no one to turn too, his thoughts filled with nothing but hatred and vengeance, he begins his journey to becoming the legendary Shield Hero and saving the parallel world.
