The marketing for the upcoming Sword Art Online movie is getting pretty insane and I mean that in the best possible way!
Recently, a brand new live-action commercial was released promoting the upcoming movie Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night. This wasn’t just one of the cast members talking excitedly about how much they’re looking forward to having people enjoy the movie. That would be way too easy for the likes of Sword Art Online.
Instead, the crew behind this one enlisted real-life newscaster Chiaki Matsuzawa to deliver a startling report about people in the world’s first full-dive video game being unable to return to the real world. Fortunately, the crew had the foresight to release it on their official Twitter account so that no one would confuse it for something genuine.

Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night will premiere in theaters in Japan this coming weekend and if it doesn’t place within the top five of the weekend box office in Japan come Monday, I will be beyond shocked. It’s already been announced that the movie will also be released in at least 40 different countries and territories later this year, around the world, in both regular and IMAX format.
If you’re not already familiar with the Sword Art Online: Progressive spinoff series, the story is basically a floor-by-floor retelling of the original Aincrad arc from the first season of the television series. However, the big difference is that the story is being told from Asuna’s point of view and starts on floor one before she is known as the “Lightning Flash”.
To say that I am excited about this one is beyond an understatement. Asuna has been a favorite character of mine for almost a decade now and, finally, we’re getting to see her true origin story in anime format!
