With over 46 years of history under its belt and a full sixteen installments (not counting the various movies or OVAs), Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the most recognizable sci-fi series out there and a great topic for this week’s column: Gundam cosplay! Whether you love building the intricate Gunpla models or digging into the lore of each series and their various timelines, there’s something for everyone to love about the series that pioneered “real robot” mecha.
The latest Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, has already hit our television screens with a splash and stars as the cover feature for May 2025’s issue of Newtype magazine. As always, you can order your own copy of the magazine through the J-List store!
There’s something more important to Gundam than the giant robots themselves, though—and that’s the gorgeous pilots risking life and limb inside these metal giants! So, join us on the J-List Blog this week as we look at some of the best cosplays for the Gundam franchise!
The Witch from Mercury Cosplays
Airing back in October 2022, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is the fifteenth entry in the mainline series and was the first to feature a female and queer lead character. We’ve rounded up several cosplays featuring the picture-perfect yuri wives, Suletta and Miorine, along with the devastatingly beautiful Cecilia Dort!
If you love the characters from The Witch of Mercury, consider checking out the adorable Gundam LookUp figures available now on the J-List store!

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Cosplay
For readers of a certain age, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its sequel, SEED Destiny, might be your “childhood” Gundam you grew up with. The first series began airing in October 2002, with SEED Destiny finishing its run three years later in October 2005. A sequel film—titled SEED Freedom—premiered in January 2024.
Let’s show the classic Gundam some love with these cosplays!

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Cosplay
Of course, let’s not forget that we’re here to celebrate the new series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The latest installment has seemingly breathed fresh air into the Gundam cosplayer community, mainly focusing on the new lead character, Amate Yuzuriha (also called Machu).

This Is What Peak Mecha Looks Like
The final, ultimate Gundam form: the cardboard box. What started as a joke cosplay in 2003 has morphed into a long-running in-joke in the Gundam community, inspiring fan art, meetups, and some surprisingly sexy cosplay. Despite its intent as a gag, the “Cardboard Gundam” has become synonymous with the community spirit of the Gundam fanbase.
Maybe the real Gundam was the friends we made along the way?
