Rumors about a Spy x Family anime bubbled to the surface a couple of months ago when someone accidentally let it slip that it was in the works. Still, we chose to wait rather than report on rumors. Then over the weekend, the Japanese blogs lit up as a crew list was leaked online, and still, we waited. Then, on Sunday, October 31st, we got what we were waiting for. Firm, solid, rock-hard confirmation in the form of a brand new website and 50-second promotional video that yes Virginia, there is a Spy x Family anime on the way.
Set to air in 2022 with studios WIT Studio (whose last production, Vivy – Flourite Eye’s Song, blew audiences away) and Cloverworks teaming up to produce the animation, there are very few ways that I could see this series not being a success. It’s always possible that a meteor might fall from the sky and destroy whatever animation has been created so far. Other than that, though, this series should already be in your “plan to watch” category.
In terms of cast and crew, we only know the aforementioned crew which was leaked a day early; Kazuhiro Furuhashi will be the director with Kazuaki Shimada providing the anime’s character designs. Takuya Eguchi will play the lead role of Loid Forger.
With over 12 million copies in circulation, the original manga is up to eight volumes in Japan as of November 4th but is to be simuldubbed by Viz Media as it runs. In the story, the main character is a spy named Twilight who must stop a war from happening by infiltrating the inner circle of a high-ranking politician. The only way to complete this mission is to form a fake family unit, including a pretend wife and daughter. Assuming the secret identity of Dr. Loid Forger, Twilight adopts a daughter named Anya (who is secretly a telepath) and marries an office worker (who is secretly an assassin), and begins his mission.
I could wax poetic about this series for pages and pages, but rather than do that I’ll simply sum it up by saying that if you haven’t heard of this series yet, you’re going to be absolutely stunned by this anime and are in for a real treat.
