The Spice and Wolf franchise will continue onward in the virtual reality world, according to an announcement that hit AnimeAnime on August 29th.
Originally a light novel series written by Isuna Hasekura that made its debut in 2006, the popular series about fictional medieval economics has made the leap to many other forms including manga and anime. In June 2019, the series jumped into the future by launching a virtual reality visual novel for the Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Oculus Go Edition (it was also made available on PC without the need for a VR headset). Now, according to the announcement, that legend will continue with a sequel VR visual novel. Unfortunately, details regarding the sequel’s release date and story are still under wraps, but stay tuned for more details.
The announcement isn’t a total loss, however, because it was also revealed on the official website that the first VR visual novel will be released on the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Playstation VR machines on September 5th.
Spice and Wolf began its print run in 2006 and continued on until 2011 when it shared its final chapters in the 17th volume, until 2016 when Hasekura started penning a sequel. The series is being released in English by Yen Press and they describe the story as:
The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine — that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. Taking the form of a fetching girl with wolf ears and a tail, Holo has wearied of tending to harvests in the countryside and strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. What kind of businessman could turn down such an offer? Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing. Will this wolf girl turn out to be too wild to tame?
